Kingborough’s slump continues

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

Glenorchy Rodman continued Kingborough’s slide down the leader board, inflicting a third straight loss in Thursday’s round of Bowls South’s Women’s Pennant, the competition’s early leaders now in 6th position and 8 points behind 4th placed Brighton.

Glenorchy Rodman’s impressive three rink, 39-shot win, 72-40, over fourth placed Kingborough, was a great response to its bad loss the previous week. With solid support from her rink of Jane Richardson, Barb Biernacki and Di Peck, Peta Barnett defeated the previously unbeaten rink of Leonie Price by 23 shots, 34-11. Barnett won 14 of the 21 ends which included two counts of six, extending her lead throughout the match.

Crystal Brooks put the foot down after lunch, picking up 14 shots over the last seven ends to defeat Maddie Johnston by 9, 24-15. Brooks was down 10-15 after 14 ends but her rink rallied to secure a good win despite good bowls by Johnston’s three Greta Murray.

The lunch break also served Joy Voss well recovering from being down 12-13 after 14 ends to win 6 of the last 7 ends to defeat Kerri Lane by 7 shots, 21-14.

Top side, Claremont, secured another spectacular victory at home to Sorell, the final score showcased Claremont’s dominance as they emerged triumphant by a staggering 46 shots, 86-40.

In the standout performance of the day, Claremont’s Maree Morgan rink showcased exceptional skills by scoring an impressive 31 shots win over Sorell’s Pat Taylor, 36-5.

Almost as equally impressive was Jan McPherson’s victory against Sorell’s Vicki Philp. Winning by 20 shots, 32-12.

The third match between Claremont’s Meekie Salter and Cheryl Hyland was closely contested, with Hyland emerging on top, after claiming 4 shots on the final end, to win a rink for Sorell, 23-17.

Sandy Bay continued their winning streak, defeating visitors, Glenorchy City, on two rinks by 11 shots overall, 67-56. Chris Dowl’s return to skipping was a masterstroke for Sandy Bay, as she won 15 of the 21 ends played against Ingrid Makowski to win by 14 shots, 27-13.

Sandy Bay’s Peri Buckley and Glenorchy City’s Leonie Hyland were evenly matched at 10 all after 11 ends.  After the break Buckley drew away to win by 7 shots, 24-17. City’s Marg Poulter was too strong for Jac Phillips winning by 10 shots, 26-16, to claim a rink win for Glenorchy City.

At Rosny Park, Howrah put in a strong performance to defeat the bottom side by 25 shots, 73-48. Charon Foster’s rink was the standout for the visitors, defeating Carolyn Monks by 22 shots, 32-10.

Rosny Park’s Judith Sherrin put in a strong effort against Rosie Geeves but to no avail with the visitors claiming a second rink win, 23-19.  Gaylene Ridgeway continued her winning streak for Rosny Park winning by slender 1 shot over Denise Tanner, 19-18.

After a slow start, Brighton’s Tayla Munro trailed Christine Thompson 6-16 at lunch, and came back with renewed energy, through standout performances from Munro’s two, Sue Grant, and her three, Judy Williams, to claw their way to a great win, 23-19.

In a closely fought match between Noelene Fehlberg and Bucks’ Lynette Hall, scores were level at lunch, promising to remain an interesting contest to the end. With 3 ends to go just one shot separated the two teams, with Fehlberg’s consistent effort enough to enable her to pull away for a well-deserved 6 shot win, 26-16.

The match between Brighton’s Lyn Triffitt and Bucks’ Jeanette Lane would prove to be the deciding factor in the overall result, and although Brighton won on two rinks, Lane’s 11 shot gap on Triffitt, 28-17, was enough for Buckingham to win the match by a shot, 63-61.
