Glenorchy Rodman topple the Tigers

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

Glenorchy Rodman made the most of the conditions, playing at home to Kingborough in Round 6 of Bowls South’s Divergence Built Premier Division, ending the visitor’s unbeaten run. In a highly entertaining game, played in wet conditions, Glenorchy Rodman defeated top side Kingborough, winning on 1 rink enough to finish 6 shots up overall, 87-81.

The home side can thank Jack Ellis and his rink of Kelvin ‘Batman’ Lynema, recently crowned BTS Open Ladies Singles Champion, Joy Voss, and Rod ‘Fitter’ Turner for the win, defeating Kingborough’s Jason Fowler by 21 shots, 35-14.

A five on the first end set the standard for the day, and Ellis’ rink never looked back, winning 14 of the 21 ends played. Kingborough prevailed on the other three rinks but could not make up the deficit.

In a close tussle all day, Ryan Guy picked up 9 shots in the last 5 ends to edge out Jacob Sheerin-Wall by 1 shot, 20-19, and Will Coad defeated Anthony Clifford by 8 shots, 22-14.

Cam Tegg led by 2 shots at the 17th end but could not stop the late surging effort of Kingborough’s Nic Courto, with his three Nathan Dinning playing well, accumulating 8 shots over the final 4 ends to win by 6, 25-19.

At Buckingham, the home continued their improved form with a second successive win, defeating Dover on 2 rinks and drawing another, 97-69. The victory was highlighted by a comprehensive win for Grant Chamberlain’s rink of Peter Gangell, Kevin Raby and Barry Nash, defeating Chris Norris, 33-9.

Todd Oakley provided a second rink win for Bucks, bettering Ricky Ormerod by 8 shots, 31-23, while Andrew Chamberlain played out a tight 16 all draw with Cam Norris. Roger Dale was Dover’s only successful skip, defeating Craig Owen, 21-17.

Howrah suffered another devastating defeat, this time at home to the previously winless Cremorne, losing on 3 rinks by 12 shots overall, 77-95. Pat Hoffman did best for the visitors, defeating Glenn Frame by 15 shots, 31-16.

Cremorne’s other two wins were closely fought encounters, Ashley Banks up by 3 against Danny Neal, 24-21, and Brad Knight edging out John Sutcliffe by 1, 20-19. In another tight contest, Howrah’s Peter Jenkins finished 1 better than Peter Marshall, 20-19.

Claremont’s season of woe continued at Sandy Bay on Saturday, sharing the rink wins but again failing to accumulate enough shots to finish in front, this time losing by 18 shots to their hosts, 61-79.

After the devastating loss to the Kingborough scallops last week, Sandy Bay bounced back to the winners’ list, defeating pre-season flag favourites, ‘The Mont’ 10-4. The competition sponsor, Chris Chalker, with his trusty Hollywood three Alex McCoull, took on Sandy Bay’s undefeated skip, Josh Lording. With Lording doing Lording things and veteran Phil Hobbs, Andy Carswell and Chris Bye all playing well, Lording went on his merry way to record a 16 shot victory, 29 – 13.

Returning to the Bay in different but similar colours, suntanned Justin Plummer took on Kyron Daly. The game was an arm wrestle for the majority. Plummer flexed his muscles late and surged ahead when it counted winning for the Mont, 19 – 13. Phil Brown dominated the front end battle for Plummer on the moist track.

In the absence of Ryan McCoull, who was in hydration heaven at a wedding, Lucas Howell took over his rink. Brad Mabb made his return to the Bay after a 5 year absence. In a luckless game, Howell went down to Claremont’s 150 game superstar, Mick Taylor, 19 – 13.

The last game saw new Bay skip, Alby Norris take on Paul ‘Cardiac’ Hart. Norris took an early lead and was never headed, finally winning 24 – 10. The front end battle was a highlight of the game with Dean Shaw and Jacquie Phillips putting on a leads’ clinic. A creaseless Stephen Graf was very sharp in his return to the back end, citing his recent Barry Lester encounter as a key influence on his game.

It was a mixed bag at Brighton, where the home side and visitors, New Norfolk, shared the rink wins, but Brighton victorious overall, 78-73, largely due to Mick Daniels’ 16 shot win against Samual Winter, 25-9. New Norfolk’s Kerry Hill did his best to match the effort, defeating Matt Breward, 26-12.

Grant Wakefield’s 10 shot margin over New Norfolk’s Lauren Banks, 27-17, more than matched Barry Bone’s 7 shot winning effort against Brighton’s Riley Davey, 21-14.
