Sandy Bay Women Surge in Round 6

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

In Round 6 of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant, in what can only be described as a train wreck for the home side, Glenorchy Rodman, Sandy Bay had a massive 52 shot win, 89-37. With their front ends working beautifully, Sandy Bay’s Peri Buckley and Jac Phillips were impressive. In a stellar performance, Peri Buckley and her team of Gail Price, Maxine Munro and Jann Baxter defeated Rodman’s in-form skip, Joy Voss by 34 shots, 39-5, winning 16 of the 21 ends played.

Equally as impressive was Jac Phillips and her team of Yvonne Buckley, Helen Barnes and Sally Knott, who, from the outset, had control of their match with Rodman’s Crystal Brooks, leading 22-0 after 9 ends, and going on to win by 24 shots, 34-10. Phillips also limited her opponent to 5 winning ends, a 6 on the 19th end more than doubling Brooks’ score.

The only bright light for the home side was Peta Barnett’s rink, which defeated Sandy Bay’s Robyn Leggett by 6 shots. Barnett won 7 ends on the trot from end the 11th to 17th to jump to a 19-9 lead before Leggett mounted a comeback to go down by 6 shots, 22-16.

In an impressive performance at Buckingham, with ideal weather conditions and the visitors prepared to play from the beginning, Claremont triumphed over the home side with a 10-point, 2 rink victory, 67-52, propelling them back to the top of the ladder.

The scores were neck and neck throughout the game between Buckingham’s Christine Thompson and Meekie Salter, with the scores even on 5 occasions. An intense finish was guaranteed with 1 end to play, and the scores tied 22-all. A single to Thompson enabled her to emerge victorious over Salter, 23-22.

Although Kingborough won on 2 rinks it still lost its match to visitors, Brighton, 50-57, and in the process slipped to 4th on the ladder. Leonie Price and her team started strongly against Brighton’s Noelene Fehlberg, leading for most of the game, by as much as 9 shots after 15 ends, Price just managed to eventually win by a single shot, 17-16, after dropping 9 shots to Fehlberg over the final 6 ends.

The match between Kingborough’s Maddie Johnston and Brighton’s Taylor Munro was a tight tussle from the outset with the scores tied on 4 separate occasions, and neither skip gaining more than a 4 shot advantage at any stage. Picking up 7 shots from the 18th to 20th ends, Johnston held on for another 1 shot win for Kingborough, 19-18.

Kerrie Lane made a great start in her debut as a skip for Kingborough, leading by as much as 8 shots against Brighton’s Lyn Triffitt. Triffitt used her extensive experience to power home over second half of the match, accumulating 15 shots to take the rink win, 23-14, and overall honours for Brighton.

Howrah made light work of their encounter with their visitors, Glenorchy City, completing an impressive 2 rink, 32 shot win, 76-44. Denise Tanner and her team contributed most to Howrah’s winning margin, defeating Leonie Hyland by 21 shots, 33-12.

Rosie Geeves added a second rink win to Howrah’s tally, defeating Yvonne Woodward, 26-13. Ingrid Makowski’s 2 shot victory over Howrah’s Charon Foster, 19-17, enabled City a minor reward for their efforts.

Sorell secured some well needed points against Rosny Park at home, 72-59.

Sorell was well ahead on 2 rinks at lunch, however after the break Rosny rallied with some tight ends to close the gap.

Cheryl Holland’s rink, with contributions from all members but particularly Elaine Winthrop, helped the home side to a convincing victory though her 21 shot victory against Rosny’s Gaylene Ridgeway, 29-8.

In a close contest with Rosny’s Carolyn Monks, Vicki Philp added a second rink win to Sorell’s tally with her slim 1 shot win, 22-21. Judith Sherrin gained a rink win for Rosny in her 9 shot defeat of Pat Taylor, 30-21.
