Pennant (THU), The Mercury, Updates

A sunny day creates ideal conditions

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

In a closely contested match with some outstanding performances from both sides, and played in near-perfect weather conditions, the Claremont Division 1 ladies took on the formidable Glenorchy Rodman’s Division 1 ladies in Round 4 of Bowls South’s Thursday Women’s Pennant. Despite their best efforts, Claremont fell short by six shots overall, 48-54, with Glenorchy Rodman emerging victorious.

The standout performance of the day came from Claremont’s skip, Maree Morgan, who delivered an impressive 5 shot win. Maree’s rink led the charge throughout the match, securing a well-deserved win against Jenny Suttie’s rink, 20-15. Maree’s team showcased their dominance by scoring 5 shots on the crucial 16th end, sealing their victory despite a spirited rally from the opposition on ends 17 to 19.

Meanwhile, Jan McPherson’s rink fought valiantly but unfortunately fell 7 shots short, losing to Rodman’s Joy Voss. Voss’s rink took control from the very first end and maintained their lead throughout the day to win, 19-12.

In the final match, Meekie Salter’s rink put up a strong fight, leading the way until the 17th end when Rodman’s Peta Barnett scored 3 shots. Despite Salter’s valiant efforts to stage a comeback, Barnett proved too strong, ultimately winning by 4 shots, 20-16.

Kingborough Division 1 ladies played Rosny Park at the Kingborough Indoor Bowls Centre, winning on 2 rinks by 31 shots, 77-46. Contributing the bulk of Kingborough’s winning margin, Sue Clark, with her team playing well, started strongly against Gaylene Ridgway to lead 21-5 at lunch, and then finishing the day with a resounding 29 shot win, 41-12.

Leonie Price had a tough day early on against Rosny’s Chris McGrath, but with consistent bowling from all members of her team, claimed a second rink win for the home side, 21-14.

Kerry Lane, skipping for the first time for Kingborough in the absence of Maddie Johnston, and although she enjoyed great support from her team Kerrie could not quite manage to get the better of Rosny’s Carolyn Monks, dropping a 3 on the last end to lose by 5 shots, 15-20.

Brighton hosted Sandy Bay in perfect conditions but due to the heavy rain on Wednesday evening, the game was played on the synthetic surface.  Noelene Fehlberg’s team fought a closely contested game throughout the day with Sandy Bay’s Jac Phillips, with the final score of 22-19 reflective of a good team effort.

Brighton’s Lyn Triffitt led all day against Robyn Leggett, ably assisted by the strong play of her lead, Marg Felmingham, and Di Cleary’s exceptional game at 3, indicative of another fine team effort to win by 17 shots, 28-11.

Sandy Bay picked up a rink win through the sustained efforts of Peri Buckley. Her opponent, Tayla Munro, after trailing 18-4 at lunch, staged a strong comeback but eventually succumbed, 16-26.

Sorell was in need of home ground advantage against the reigning champions, Howrah, and at the lunch break things were looking promising with Vicki Philp’s rink ahead 13-2 and Cheryl Holland even. However, the sun came out and so did the opposition, Denise Tanner converting amazing skip bowls and her front end having bowls in the head, overpowered Philp to win by 5 shots, 20-15.

Sorell’s Beth Connell, skipping for the first time this season, went down by 11 shots to Rosie Geeves, 13-24. With all members of her team contributing, Cheryl Holland secured 2 points for the home side, defeating Charon Foster by 5 shots, 26-21.

In the final match of the round, home side Buckingham won on 2 rinks and drew the 3rd against Glenorchy City, winning by 31 shots, 73-42. Jeanette Lane’s 28 shot win, 37-9, over Leonie Hyland contributed the bulk of the shots difference, with Christine Thompson chiming in with a neat 3 shot victory against Ingrid Makowski, 17-14. Bucks’ Lynette Hall played out a thrilling draw with Margaret Poulter, 19-all.
