Top sides record resounding wins

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

Round 3 of Bowls South’s Thursday Women’s Pennant was highlighted by imposing all-rinks wins to the top sides; Kingborough, Sandy Bay and Howrah. Kingborough played Glenorchy City on a very windy Glenorchy City green and managed to come away with a great all-rinks win, 72-49. Sue Clark’s rink started strongly against the Marg Poulter rink, leading 9-3 at lunch, and with Yvonne Duffy leading well throughout, Lou Wallace consolidating in second and with her three, Nadine Seabourne, playing some great bowls, Sue powered on after the break to win by 16 shots, 30-14.

It was a different story for Maddie Johnson’s team, having a real struggle early against Yvonne Clifford but with a great, sustained team effort over the course of the match was rewarded with a tight 3 shot victory, 24-21, in trying conditions. Leonie Price, with Vicki Bannister at three playing some great bowls and her front end contributing to the team effort, completed a perfect day for Kingborough in her defeat of Leonie Hyland, 18-14.

Despite losing on all rinks Sorell put up a fighting effort against Sandy Bay in perfect weather at Sandy Bay. Sandy Bay’s Robyn Leggett and her rink of Chris Dowl, Adrienne Calnan and Jan Hobbs played consistent bowls, contributing most to Sandy Bay’s 23-shot winning margin with a 20 shot win against Trish Taylor, 29-9. The matches on the other two rinks were very close.

In a keen tussle, the Bay’s Jac Phillips prevailed by the barest of margins, 20-19, against Cheryl Holland, who again performed well for her new club. In a low scoring encounter on the third rink, Sorell’s Vicki Philp, with her three, Claire Doran, playing well in her first year in Division 1, played consistent skip’s bowls against Peri Buckley but even though she picked up the last end it was not enough to stop Buckley winning by 2 shots, 16-14.

In a sunny showdown, Claremont Division 1 ladies faced off against Brighton Division 1 ladies in Round 3. The final score saw Claremont fall short and Brighton emerging victorious, 57-55. The standout performance for Claremont came from skip Jan MacPherson, who had an impressive win, defeating Noelene Fehlberg by 9 shots, 24-15. Despite a slow start, Claremont’s Maree Morgan fought on valiantly after being 11 shots down halfway through the match showed great determination and managed to narrow the gap, but it wasn’t enough, ultimately falling 3 shots short of victory, 18-21, losing to the star player on the rink, Brighton’s Tayla Munro. On the third rink, Lyn Triffitt built up a winning margin over the middle stages of her match with Meekie Salter to close out a comfortable 8 shot winning margin, 21-13, that ensured overall victory for Brighton.

Howrah made good use of the home advantage of playing on its indoor surface in its match with Buckingham, for an impressive 37 shot, all-rinks win, 84-47. Rosie Geeves bounced back from the disappointment of the previous week with a convincing 16 shot win over Bucks’ Christine Thompson, 28-12. Howrah’s Denise Tanner celebrated her return to the side by defeating Lynette Hall by 13 shots, 31-18. Charon Foster completed the all-rinks victory for Howrah with her second win for the season, this time at the expense of Bucks’ Jeanette Lane, 25-17.

Rosny Park remains winless for the season after another disappointing performance, this time at home to Glenorchy Rodman, which was successful on two rinks, winning by 16 shots, 68-52. Carolyn Monks was the standout performer for the home side, defeating Rodman’s Jennie Suttie by 15 shots, 25-10. Unfortunately, Monks received no support from her fellow skips, Gaylene Ridgeway surrendering to Peta Barnett, 13-31, and Judith Sherrin losing to Rodman’s leading skip, undefeated for the season, Joy Voss, 14-17.
