Women do battle in strong windy conditions

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

The second round of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant was played on Tuesday this week due to Royal Hobart Show Day holiday today (Thursday 26 October). Ladder leaders, Claremont, defeated visitors Sandy Bay by 22 shots, 61-39, to take a 10-2 point win.  Despite the stoic efforts from both sides, gale force winds for the last 7 ends of the match made for extremely difficult bowling. Wendy Gray, filling in as skip for Claremont, defeated Robyn Leggett by 13 shots, 22-9, and Maree Morgan defeated Jac Phillips by 12 shots, 22-10, for Claremont’s other rink win. Sandy Bay’s sole rink win was ably led by Peri Buckley, who played superb bowls to overcome Meekie Salter by 3 shots, 20-17.

At Glenorchy Rodman, the home side surrendered a good lead to finish with a draw, 59-all, against a Glenorchy City side that handled the windy conditions far better. At the lunch break Glenorchy Rodman enjoyed a 13 shot buffer thanks mainly to Joy Voss’ rink which was 14 shots to the better of Leonie Hyland. Voss received great support from her rink of Barb Biernacki, Di Peck and Michelle Moate, winning in the end by 21 shots, 31-10. Peta Barnett was 7 shots up at the break but conceded 17 shots over the last eight ends to go down by 15, 10-25, to Marg Poulter.  Poulter was well served by Miriam Garrett as her three and Gail Cruise who led very well all day. Rodman’s Jennie Suttie had a battle against Yvonne Cliffe, who played some big bowls to secure a further two points for the visitors, winning by 6 shots, 24-18.

Kingborough played last year’s Division 1 premiers, Howrah, at home at the Kingborough Indoor centre and had a convincing, 81-54, two rink win overall. Maddie Johnston’s rink came from behind after a slow start before lunch to defeat Rosie Geeves, 38-10. Maddie had great support from her team of Kerrie Lane, Greta Murray and lead Sue Mann, with all playing well, and with some great bowls from her third Kerrie Lane came away with a convincing win. Leonie Price’s rink began slowly, also, going to lunch with a 12-9 lead against Howrah’s Janet Rutherford rink. All contributed to the second half to complete a good win over Rutherford, 22-19. Sue Clark’s rink built up a commanding 17-3 lead over Howrah’s Charon Foster after 8 ends. The lunch break changed the momentum of the game with Foster’s team out-bowling their opposition to equal the scores by the 19th end, then powering home over the final two ends to finish with a 4 shot buffer over Clark’s team, 25-21, and win a rink for their side.

Sorell’s visit to Buckingham ended in a devastating 58 shot loss to their hosts, 43-101. Cheryl Holland was Sorell’s sole winning skip, defeating her opponent, Jeanette Lane, 28-11. June Guy equalised for Buckingham, winning by 20 shots, 32-12. At this stage the sides were evenly balanced, with Bucks holding a slight 3 shot advantage. Lynette Hall’s mammoth 55 shot win against Sorell’s Patricia Taylor, 58-3, changed the complexion of the match entirely, contributing the bulk of the shots difference between the two sides.

On their home green, Brighton recorded their first victory in Division 1, defeating Rosny Park by 14 shots, 69-54, winning on two rinks. Noelene Fehlberg led the way for Brighton with a solid 16 shot margin against Christine McGrath, 33-17. Tayla Munro rewarded her new club with the other rink win, 6 shots up on Gaylene Ridgeway, 19-13. Judith Sherrin claimed a rink win for Rosny heading Lyn Triffitt by 7 shots, 24-17.
