Kingborough topple Rosny for top spot

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

10 November 2022 (Round 4)

The Kingborough Indoor Bowls Centre hosted the match of the round between the two previously undefeated sides of BTS Women’s Thursday Division 1 Pennant, Kingborough and Rosny Park. Kingborough claimed early bragging rights with a 16 shot, 2 rink win and 10 valuable points to go to the top of the table.

The competition’s top skip, Leonie Price, playing some magnificent conversion shots and ably supported with excellent bowls from her lead, Pauline Connell, was always in control against Rosny’s Judith Sherrin, winning her match 29-13. Sue Clark was the other rink winner for Kingborough, 21-14 against evergreen Ailsa Milburn. Vicki Bannister could not overcome a slow start against Gaylene Ridgeway, who claimed 2 points for Rosny, 19-12.

Howrah returned to winning form against their hosts, Glenorchy Rodman, winning on 2 rinks 49-44, and 10 competition points. Against a rapidly improving side it was Howrah’s greater experience, grit and determination that ensured victory. Howrah’s rink winners were Denise Tanner, 18-14 over Crystal Brooks, and Rosie Geeves, who defeated Roseanne McCann, 15-11. In a contest which saw the lead change several times, Peta Barnett claimed 2 points for Glenorchy Rodman, 19-15, against Charon Foster.

In hot and extremely windy conditions which made scoring very difficult at Sorell, Sandy Bay finally broke through for their first win of the season, a 59-51, 2 rink win against Sorell. Chris Dowl, skipping for the first time this season, defeated Sorell’s Patricia Taylor, 25-15, and Jackie Phillips was the other winner for Sandy Bay, 22-12 against Janet Cowen. A 12 shot win over Sandy Bay’s Peri Buckley, 24-12, by Vicki Philp gained 2 points for Sorell.

At Claremont, the visiting side, Buckingham, completed a 2 rink win over Claremont in a very close encounter by 4 shots, 54-50. Buckingham’s Chris Thompson was the biggest winner of the day, by 4 shots over Claremont’s Di peck, 18-14. Buckingham’s other rink winner was Jeanette Lane, who fought back from being 6 down at the 14th end to finish 2 shots to the better of Maree Morgan, 18-16. In a tight battle over the full 21 ends, with the lead changing a number of times, Joy Voss hung on for an 18-16 win against Buckingham’s Lynette Hall, and 2 competition points for Claremont.

In the final match of the round Glenorchy City could not recover from the long trip to Orford, losing on all rinks by 43 shots, 38-81. Orford’s winning skips were Elaine Taylor, 29-10, Therese Gatenby, 31-12, and in the closest game of the day, Jenny Martin, 21-16, against Glenorchy City’s Elaine Hyland.
