Premier Division report by Peter Kirby

5 November 2022 (Round 4)

In the match of the round of the Derwent Eye Specialists Premier Division Pennant bowls competition at Claremont, Pathways Jackaroo Lauren Banks played two superb shots on the final end of her contest with Claremont’s Shane Peck to power New Norfolk to a 3 shot win and 10 valuable points. Claremont’s Adam Taylor, playing three to his father Michael, produced some excellent shots to help his team to an 8 shot win over the Wayne Clark rink. Kerry Hill was New Norfolk’s other successful skip, defeating Paul Hart by 8 shots, 22 to 14. Paul Grover’s defeat of Chris Chalker by 1 shot, 20 to 19, ensured 4 competition points for Claremont.

Glenorchy Rodman prevailed on three rinks in a tight tussle with a gallant Buckingham side by 10 shots. Grant Chamberlain, through some excellent bowls from his number 3, Christine Thompson, secured two points for his side with a 4 shot win over Rodman’s previously undefeated Luke Turner. Glenorchy Rodman’s three winning skips were Jack Ellis, who played some great conversion shots against Buck’s Stuart Rees, 20 to 14, Cam Tegg won 24 to 18 against Barry Nash, after withstanding a late rally by Nash, and Tony Vince chimed in with a close 2 shot win over Andrew Chamberlain, 20 to 18.

A relaxing bus trip to Brighton proved beneficial for Kingborough in maintaining its undefeated run this season, completing a 26 shot, 3 rink win over their hosts, a 12 points to 2 result. Kingborough’s Nic Courto led the way with a 14 shot win over Grant Wakefield, 27 to 13, with Will Coad’s rink not too far behind with a 12 shot win against the Matthew Breward rink, 26 to 14. The other two rinks were much closer affairs with Ryan Guy the third rink winner for Kingborough by 2 shots from Greg Fehlberg, 15 to 13. Greg was ably supported by junior, Riley Davie, playing his first game in the three position. John North was the sole winner for Brighton, 22 to 20, over the Jason Fowler rink.

Beltana advanced to fourth position on the ladder after a gripping contest with the still winless Dover, splitting the rink wins to gain 10 points by 6 shots. Beltana’s winning skips were Shane Young by 17 shots against Ricky Ormerod, 35 to 18, and Alex McCoull, 19 shots to Roger Dale’s 17. Chris Norris was the big winner for Dover, 25 to 14, against Shaun Leitch. Josh Mazur was the other victor for Dover, 21 to 19 against Garry Richardson.

In the final match of the round Sandy Bay, on its home green, had a 38 shot win over Cremorne, winning on two rinks and drawing a third for an 11 points to 3 victory. Leading skip, Keghan Booth, had a massive 33 shot win against Cremorne’s Ralph Tieman, 40 to 7. David Morris was Sandy Bay’s other winner, 18 to 12 against Leigh Munnings. In a very close encounter, Barry Banks won a rink for Cremorne by 1 shot, 14 to 13 over Justin Plumber. Sandy Bay’s Andrew Norris and Cremorne’s Bradley Knight had a 14-all draw.
