Good numbers contest open singles

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

Bowls Tasmania South’s Championship events for 2023-24 commenced on Sunday with sectional play in Men’s Open Singles being held at the Kingborough Bowls Club, and Rosny Park Bowls Club hosting sectional play of Women’s Open Singles and Men’s B Grade Singles. Due to the low number of entries in Bowls Tasmania South’s Women’s B Grade Singles, play in that event will commence on Sunday 12 November on Kingborough’s greens.

15 sections of Men’s Open Singles were contested at Kingborough, involving 42 bowlers. The winners of each section have progressed to the round of 16 to be played at the Kingborough Bowls Club on Sunday, commencing at 10am, with Ashley Banks (Cremorne) drawn to play Michael Taylor (Claremont), Tim Norris (Dover) v. Gavin Cleary (Kingborough), Jordan Croft (Brighton) v. Phil Ions (Cremorne), Nathan Dinning (Kingborough) v. Jack Ellis (Glenorchy Rodman), Shane Garth (Dover) v. Joh Lording (Sandy Bay), Pat Hoffman (Cremorne) v. Ricky Ormerod (Dover). Graeme Nibbs drew the bye into the Quarter Final round to be played later in the day.

The Women’s B Grade Singles Quarter Finals will be held at Kingborough on Sunday, commencing at 10am. Three matches will be played with Dianne Coleman (Taroona) drawn to play Yvonne Duffy (Kingborough), Halina Travers (Howrah) v. Fiona Hickey (Kingborough), and Ros Bridge (Taroona) playing Rose Williams (Brighton). Jo-Anne Leslie (Brighton) has drawn the bye into the Semi Final round.

The Women’s Open and Men’s B Grade Singles Quarter Finals will be played at Rosny Park, commencing at 10am. Meekie Salter (Claremont) will play Denise Tanner (Howrah), Joy Voss (Glenorchy Rodman) v. Barb Liddington (Dover), Tayla Munro (Brighton) v. Lynette Hall (Buckingham), and the final match has two Glenorchy Rodman members, Judy Davis and Crystal Brooks playing each other.

The four matches of the Men’s B Grade Quarter Finals will be played between Rob Shaw and Robert Johnston (Howrah), Robert Lockley (Claremont) and Richard Wilson (Sandy Bay), David Williams and Rickie Monks (New Norfolk), and New Norfolk members, Tim Morgan and Danny Lockley.

Some spectacular bowls action can be expected at the Kingborough Bowls Club on Sunday 19 November when the four bowlers remaining in Bowls South’s Women’s Open and B Grade, and Men’s Open and B Grade Singles Championships compete in their respective Semi Finals at 10am, with the winners progressing to the Finals later in the day.
