Officiating Offerings – May 2023

These snippets of information are going to be issued regularly by Bowls Tasmania. If, as a National Umpire, you do not have a copy of the Officiating Manual it is now available online. Re-accreditation is also available online with just the last segment face-to-face with a β€˜Presenter & Assessor’.

Myths and Misconceptions

“When the umpire or measurer is on the green measuring for shot, players have to stand on the bank.”

No such rule, never has been, a real myth.

There is no Law that is relevant here. However it is reasonable for the umpire to request players to stand back, particularly if the umpire is feeling under pressure or player’s shadows are falling over the head.   Some players do not resort to the bank – that is fine, but they do not have to.   We all need to be respectful of the Umpire’s call and requests.

Measuring Tips – Trammels

Position and alignment of the trammel is all important.   Trammels must be positioned:

  • In a straight line between the nearest points of the jack and the bowl with the LARGE END OF THE TRAMMEL AGAINST THE BOWL.
  • Sitting flat on the ground
  • With a gap of around 70mm between the SMALL END PLATE AND THE JACK to allow for calliper use.   (Please see picture page 58 of the Officiating Manual)
