Rosny Park put in Houdini-like effort

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

11 March 2023

Rosny Park, in a Houdini-like effort, hold on to place in top Division.

Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant Division 1 roster season is now complete with the playing of Round 18. While the four remains unchanged, with Kingborough heading the table, followed by Howrah, Sandy Bay and Buckingham, all interest lay in the battle for survival at the rear of the table, with Rosny’s win and Orford’s loss confirming Orford as the side to be relegated to Division 2.

Playing the final round in their Indoor Centre, Kingborough secured top spot on the ladder with a comprehensive two rink win, 66-46, over Claremont. Maddie Johnston and her team of Leonie Price, Colleen Dance and Pauline Connell, started strongly against Maree Morgan. After scoring a seven on the third end, and with a coordinated effort from her team, Johnston controlled the remainder of the match to win by twenty one shots, 34-13.

Sonia Martyn, Vicki Bannister, Greta Murray and Sue Mann combined well against Meekie Salter and again the teamwork prevented Salter from having any influence on the game, with the Kingborough combination winning by ten shots, 20-10. Sue Clark, Nadine Seabourne, Kerrie Lane and Liz Rickards started confidently against Claremont’s Joy Voss, but were unable to maintain the momentum with Voss winning the final five ends to score a face-saving win for Claremont, 23-12.

Second-placed Howrah finished the roster season with a resounding forty-six shot all-rinks victory over visitors, Sorell, 87-41, with Denise Tanner leading the way with her twenty-nine shot win over Vicki Philp, 39-10. Rosie Geeves chimed in with a good winning margin of eleven shots over Trish Taylor, 24-13, and Charon Foster ended with a solid six shot gap over Janet Cowen, 24-18.

In a rehearsal of the Elimination Semi Final between the same sides at the same venue, Sandy Bay claimed bragging rights with a two rink thirty shot win against Buckingham at Sandy Bay, 74-44.  Peri Buckley soundly defeated Jeanette Lane by twenty five shots, winning sixteen of the twenty one ends played, and Jac Phillips finished strongly to defeat Lynette Hall by six shots, 27-21. Buckingham’s Christine Thompson finished one shot better than Robyn Leggett, 17-16, in a closely contested game.

After a six game losing streak, Rosny Park gained some relief from their all-rinks, thirteen shot victory against visitors, Glenorchy City, 58-45, and in a last gasp effort, moved away from the dreaded last position on the ladder. Marlene Wakefield led the way with her ten shot win against Ingrid Makowski, while Ailsa Milburn, 17-15, against Leonie Hyland, and Gaylene Ridgeway winning by one shot, 19-18, against Cheryl Nielsenbeck, were forced to work much harder for their wins.

Glenorchy Rodman finished the season on a high, defeating Orford on two rinks by ten shots overall, 57-47. Crystal Brooks played some great conversion shots to defeat Jenny Martyn by fourteen shots 25-11, and Jenny Suttie, with Lyn Flack and Liz Sutton giving good support, defeated Audrey Baker by three shots, 18-15. Orford’s Patricia Thirlway, celebrating her seventieth birthday, gave solid support to her skip, Dinah Bennett, to defeat Peta Barnett by seven shots, 21-14.
