Kingborough survive close encounter

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

16 February 2023 (Round 15)

Top side, Kingborough, travelled to a windy and damp Glenorchy City and after a hard-fought game, came away relieved victors, just getting home with a 1 rink win by 7 shots, 59-52. Sue Clark, along with Leonie Price, Kerrie Lane and Theresa Direen, were the big winners for Kingborough on the day against Cheryl Nielsenbeck.  A solid team effort saw the lead change a number of times during the first 12 ends, until Clark’s team settled into a winning rhythm and finished 11 shots up, 22-11. Sonia Martyn and her team of Nadine Seabourne, Greta Murray and Sue Mann enjoyed a very solid start against City’s Leonie Hyland until losing 3 shots on the 17th end and allowing Hyland into the game.  Scores were level going into the final end with Martyn was holding 3 or 4 shots in the head, until Hyland took the shot with her first bowl, and then added another to seal the game, 18-20. Kingborough’s rink of Maddie Johnston, Vicki Bannister, Colleen Dance and Pauline Connell were able to contain Ingrid Makowski until losing a 6 on the 13th end, then gaining another 8 shots over the following two ends. Despite killing the end twice, Johnston was unable to take the lead, finishing 19-21.

Playing at home on a perfect green where the rink speed changed after a sudden downpour halted play for some 30 minutes coinciding with the lunch break, 9th placed Orford was no match for the finely tuned Sandy Bay side.  Sandy Bay’s three rinks each won by wide margins, Peri Buckley, 35-11 against Dinah Bennett, Jac Phillips winning by 23 shots, 32-9, over Jenny Martyn, and Robyn Leggett 21 shots to the better of Audrey Baker, 30-9, in a show of solidarity where each team member played well. Sandy Bay won the majority of ends on each rink and as a consequence Orford was not able to obtain the mat to get back any sort of advantage.  Multiples to Sandy Bay throughout the match contributed to the 68 shot difference, 97-29.

In a great game at Sorell, visiting side, Claremont scored a morale boosting 2 rink win, with a drawn game on the 3rd rink, for an overall 10 shot victory, 64-54. All rinks worked hard on their games and some great bowls were played.  On the last end Claremont’s Maree Morgan was 14-16 down on the board and 1 up in the head, with good positional bowls in the head from her team, Morgan managed to trail the jack for a 3 with her last bowl, defeating Sorell’s Beth Connell 17-16. It was Cornell’s first game skipping and she played really well. Joy Voss’ rink had a slightly slow start and was 0-6 down after 3 ends but by the 7th end had recovered to 6-6. It was close thereafter, Voss was a few shots down on the last end but drew the shot, ending with a fitting draw with Sorell’s Vicki Philip, 23-23. On the final rink Meekie Salter played Kaye Upchurch. Salter was a few shots up throughout, with Upchurch making a bit of a comeback from the 17th end. However, Salter’s team scored a 5 on the last end resulting a winning score of 24-15.

At Rosny Park, the hosts were completely outplayed by 2nd placed Howrah, with the visitors winning on all rinks, 88-44. Denise Tanner’s rink led the way for Howrah with a 22 shot win against Marlene Wakefield, 35-13, with great support from Rosie Geeves, 27-14 against Gaylene Ridgeway, and Charon Foster defeating Ailsa Milburn by 9 shots, 26-17.

Glenorchy Rodman’s hopes of finals action suffered a dent at Buckingham, with the home side winning their encounter by 8 shots, 72-64. Bucks’ winning rinks were Jeanette Lane, 7 shots to the good of Peta Barnett, 26-19, and Christine Thompson’s close 3 shot win against Crystal Brooks, 23-20. Rodman’s Jennie Suttie gained a rink win for her side with a hard-fought 2 shot win against Lynette Hall, 25-23.
