Sandy Bay take advantage of Sorell

Great bowling conditions saw Sandy Bay gain a 2 rink win against Sorell at home, 67-50, in Round 13 of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant.  Sandy Bay’s Robyn Leggett and her team of Gail Price, Sally Knott and Chris Dowl led the way with their defeat of Sorell’s Vicki Philp by 19 shots, 28-9, playing steady bowls and winning on 13 ends. The Sorell rink of Janet Cowen took the early initiative against the Sandy Bay Peri Buckley rink, with this match settling down to tight tussle until the 17th end, when the Sandy Bay rink took the lead with a 4 to gain the lead which it did not surrender, eventually going on to win, 22-16. The Sorell rink of Trish Taylor was never behind thanks to consistent lead bowls by Karen Scott, tight bowls by second, Elaine Winthrop, and great conversions by third Kaye Upchurch. Trish Taylor played some great skip bowls when under pressure against Jac Phillips to ensure a rink win for the visitors, 25-17.

Ladder leaders, Buckingham, played well on their home green in windy conditions to win convincingly in an all-rinks defeat of Claremont, 80-36. Big winning margins on two of the rinks ensured Buckingham’s victory with Chris Thompson’s team defeating Maree Morgan by 20 shots, 31-11, and Lynette all also having a good win over Claremont’s Meekie Salter 31-12. In a more even contest on the third rink, Jeanette Lane defeated Joy Voss by 5 shots, 18-13.

Kingborough travelled to a very windy Rosny Park, winning the day on all rinks, 72-39. Maddie Johnston, playing her first game for the season, and her team of Colleen Dance , Vicki Bannister and Leonie Price melded well against Ailsa Milburn and were never really troubled, having a convincing 17 shot win, 30-13. Sue Clark, with Theresa Direen, Kerrie Lane and Liz Rickards started slowly against Marlene Wakefield, despite Direen leading well.  With the team adjusting well to the very difficult conditions, Wakefield only managed to win six ends for the day, and Clark finished with an 11 shot win, 22-11. Sonia Martyn, Sue Mann, Greta Murray and Nadine Seabourne had a real tussle against Gaylene Ridgeway, with the scores changing a number of times throughout the game.  Down five shots after the 16th end, Martyn’s team fought back to win the final six ends, adding a further 10 shots to the score and defeating Ridgeway, 20-15.

At Howrah, the home side put a big dent in Glenorchy Rodman’s finals aspirations with an emphatic all-rinks victory by 37 shots, 78-41. The win was set up by Charon Foster’s rink with their dominant 22 shot defeat of Lyn Flack, 31-9, ably supported by Denise Tanner’s 10 shot win against Peta Barnett, and in a close encounter with Crystal Brooks, Rosie Geeves getting home by 5 shots, 23-18.

In the final match of the round, Orford travelled to Glenorchy City and Jenny Martyn did her best for her side with her 3 shot win against City’s Ingrid Makowski, 18-13, but Glenorchy City’s Leonie Hyland put the result of the match beyond doubt in her 33 shot defeat of Audrey Baker, 39-6. Cheryl Nielsenbeck ensured a 2 rink win for City by defeating Dinah Bennett, 20-13, for City to run out winners by 37 shots, 74-37.
