Kingborough steals into top spot

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

9 February 2023 (Round 14)

A feature of Round 14 of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant were the matches between the top 2 sides, and 3rd playing 4th. Kingborough, in its Indoor fortress, stole top position from Buckingham with a very convincing 79-41, all rinks win. Maddie Johnston was the big winner for Kingborough, defeating Christine Thompson 33-8. Sue Clark’s rink, with all members playing well, eclipsed Lynette Hall, 24-15. From being 2-16 down after the 10th end, Sonia Martyn and her team took complete control after the lunch break in their match with Jeanette Lane, not losing another end until the last, to win, 22-18.

Exceptionally good bowls were played in the Howrah versus Sandy Bay match played at Howrah.  Thrilling close contests in the Foster v. Leggett and Tanner v. Buckley games resulted in one loss and one win by 7 shots each, 23-16 and 13-20. Howrah’s Rosie Geeves, with scintillating skip’s bowls, led the Jac Phillips rink for the entire match, to win 26-16, and an overall win to Howrah, 62-52, in the process making Sandy Bay’s finals prospects more vulnerable.

After a slow start, and needing to win to give themselves any chance of finals action, Glenorchy Rodman claimed an all-rinks win against their visitors, Rosny Park, 77-46. Peta Barnett and Jenny Suttie were down 10-nil against Gaylene Ridgeway and Ailsa Milburn, respectively, before rallying to win their matches, Bennett, 28-17, and Suttie, 24-16. Crystal Brooks and Marlene Wakefield had a tight tussle before Brooks won six of the last seven ends to run out winners, 25-13.

In a close match at Claremont the home side won on 2 rinks by 3 shots overall, 59-56, against Glenorchy City. Joy Voss’s team played well throughout defeating Cheryl Nielsenbeck 25-16. Meekie Salter had a narrow 2 shot win over Leonie Hyland in a hard-fought game, 19-17. Maree Morgan was in front at the lunch break but some great bowls by Ingrid Makowski and her team ended in a 23-15 win to Glenorchy City.

Conditions were perfect at Orford, which won on 2 rinks and drew the other against Sorell, 58-47. Despite good starts on all rinks by the visitors, Kaye Upchurch, with consistent bowls from her 3rd Trish Taylor, picked up the only point for Sorell, drawing 17-all with Dinah Bennett. Orford’s winning skips were Jenny Martyn, 22-15 against Janet Cowen, and Audrey Baker’s 4 shot victory over Vicki Philp, 19-15.
