24 January 2023 (Round 12)

Bowls South’s Women’s Pennant, played on Tuesday this week due to Thursday being a holiday for Australia Day, has its third ladder leader in three weeks as a result of Buckingham’s all rinks win away to Orford by 30 shots, 77-47, and other results on the day. Big winning margins to Jeanette Lane, 13 shots to the good of Jenny Martin, 30-17, and Christine Thompson, by 10 shots against Elaine Taylor, 24-14, set up the win for Buckingham. Lynette Hall provided Buckingham’s third rink win with her 7 shot victory against Dinah Bennett, 23-16.

At Glenorchy Rodman, an even match was played between Sandy Bay and their hosts, and with only a few ends to play, both sides were locked in a tight battle for supremacy with Sandy Bay eventually the victors by 2 shots, 60-58, winning on 2 rinks.  Sandy Bay’s Robyn Leggett defeated Glenorchy Rodman’s Jenny Suttie by 7 shots22-15, in a high standard game with superior draw bowls from both sides.  Leggett, in particular, displayed controlled skip’s bowls. The outstanding lead bowls of Sandy Bay’s Jan Hobbs set up the Carol Bannister rink so that they led for the entire game. A 5 to Crystal Brooks on the 15th end meant Glenorchy Rodman came to within 1 shot of Sandy Bay but Sandy Bay maintained their slight margin and withstood a late challenge from Crystal Brooks to win by 2 shots, 24-22. Peta Barnett continued her impressive season, defeating Sandy Bay’s Peri Buckley by 7 shots, 21-14, and with Barb Biernacki playing well in the three spot won a rink for the home team.  The tight heads in this match saw great bowls played as both skips vied for winning shots.

Kingborough hosted ladder leader Howrah in the Indoor Centre and ousted Howrah to third spot on the ladder, winning by 10 shots, 60-50, although only successful on 1 rink.. the difference between the two sides was Kingborough’s Sonia Martyn, along with Nadine Seabourne, Greta Murray and Sue Mann, who were slow to get on the scoreboard against Charon Foster, despite having shots in the head.  Although 5 shots down at the lunch break, Martyn’s team continued with their efforts and only allowed Foster a further 3 shots in the match.  With all members playing well, a 5 and a 4 in the final ends saw Martyn win comfortably, 27-15. Leonie Price, Vicki Bannister, Colleen Dance and Pauline Connell battled all day against the Howrah’s Denise Tanner rink.  Price played some beautiful conversion shots to maintain the lead for the majority of the day but was unable to keep Tanner from taking the lead on the 20th end, to lose the match by 1 shot, 17-18. Sue Clark and her team of Liz Rickards, Kerrie Lane and Theresa Direen played a hard fought game against Rosie Geeves.  With Direen leading well and Lane playing some exceptional bowls, Clark led until the 14th end and fought back to finish the day 2 shots down to the Howrah team, 16-18.

Sorell secured 10 points at home, winning on 2 rinks against Glenorchy City in perfect conditions for bowls.
