Sandy Bay continue on their winning way

Premier Division report by Peter Kirby

21 January 2023 (Round 12)

In Saturday’s round of Bowls South’s Derwent Eye Specialists Premier Division overcast and moist conditions at Sandy Bay saw a close encounter between the ladder leaders and the 10th placed Diggers from Dover. The Bay got the chocolates 10 – 4 in the end but it was a valiant effort by an undermanned Dover side. Dover’s 4 points came from Josh Mazur, who managed to hold on with a 1 shot win over a fast-finishing Keghan Booth, 19-18, and Barbara Liddington, who also had a 1 shot win over Justin Plummer’s star-studded rink led by Bobby Bye, 20-19. Both Liddington and her three, Cameron Norris, played telling bowls in the dying stages to grab the win on the last end of the game. Former Digger, Sandy Bay’s Josh Lording, held on to a 6 shot win, 27-21, over his mate, Jarrah Allan, in a close fought match with Lording’s rink of Darren Beattie, Matthew Grace and Andrew Carswell scoring a 5 on the second last end. The Bay’s win was set up by the ex-Victorian duo, Dave Morris and Oli Clark who, in the absence of Bryce ‘Bondi’ Guy, had a resounding 13 shot win over Chris Norris.

Glenorchy Rodman secured 12 points in a 30-shot win against New Norfolk, 92-62. Tony Vince received great support from his rink, particularly Danny Gahan and Kelvin Lynema, to defeat Lauren Banks by 22 shots, 34-12. Jack Ellis, with Greg Hartshorne, Dan Lenarcic and Grant Allford all playing well, defeated Kerry Hill by 13 shots, 24-11. In his first game, young Jordan Croft played well in the lead spot to help Luke Turner defeat a gallant Barry Bone by 4 shots, 21-17. Chris Chalker, with Anthony Briggs dominant in the three spot, defeated Cam Tegg by 9 shots, 22-13, to secure two points for the visitors.

Playing away to Beltana, Buckingham held on for a 79–75 victory in a tight encounter, largely due to the sole win by Andrew Chamberlain’s rink with a convincing 30–16 victory over Alex McCoull, set up by some strong bowling from his second, George Kovacs. Craig Owen and Gary Richardson played out an exciting 17–17 draw, while Brendan Breen, 23-16 against Grant Chamberlain, 23-16, and Shane Young, defeating Barry Nash, 19-16, secured wins for Beltana on the remaining rinks, resulting in the home team picking up 5 points in defeat.

Cremorne consolidated fourth place on the ladder on Saturday with an 18-shot win over 6tht placed Brighton. After a slow start, Peter Marshall, with his second Steve Lanning playing well, eventually got on top of Mat Breward to win by 9 shots, 24-15. Pat Hoffman jumped to an early lead against Mick Daniels and by the 14th end had a 10-shot lead, 15-5, but Daniels fought back and picked up 9 shots in the last 5 ends to lose by 5 shots, 15-19. Leigh Munnings also gained 2 points for Cremorne with a 6-shot win over Ricky Limbrick, 21-15. Brighton’s Grant Wakefield continued his good form with a 2 shot win over Brad Knight, 24-22.

Playing away at Claremont, Kingborough completed a convincing 3 rink, 41 shot win against their hosts, 107-61, with Nic Courto in total control of his match against Joy Voss in his 28-shot victory, 34-6. Jason Fowler was also dominant in his 14-shot win against Paul Hart, 29-15. Kingborough’s third rink win was secured with Ryan Guy’s 10 shot margin over Claremont’s Michael Taylor, 29-19. Shane Peck eased some of the pain of the loss for Claremont with his 6 shot win against Kingborough’s Will Coad, 21-15.
