Rodman ambush brings Kingborough undone

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

18 January 2023 (Round 11)

On their home green, Glenorchy Rodman continued their recent good form in Round 11 of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant to defeat top side Kingborough on all rinks by 17 shots, 64-47. The win was set up by Peta Barnett’s rink of Barb Biernacki, Miley Sutton and Denise Thompson, and although Kingborough’s Sue Clark and her team of Therese Direen, Kerrie Lane and Liz Rickards battled all day, Barnett won the match by 15 shots, 26-11. The other two rinks went down to the wire, both ending in 1 shot wins to Rodman. Kingborough’s Leonie Price held the lead in her match against Jennie Suttie from the lunch break until the final end, but Suttie played a superb bowl on the final end to pick up 3 shots and win the game by 1 shot, 21-20. Crystal Brooks and Kingborough’s Sonia Martyn had a great tussle all day, with Martin playing superbly, but a five on the penultimate end to Brooks tied the scores with one end to play, and continued her good form into the last end with a great front toucher to win the rink by one shot, 17-16, and secure all points for the home side.

On a fast green at Sandy Bay, the home side survived a close contest with Glenorchy City to win by 7 shots, 55-47. Peri and Yvonne Buckley, Di Salt and Adrienne Calnan played consistently to defeat Leonie Hyland by 5 shots, 20-15. Returning to Sandy Bay after a number of years at other southern clubs, Carol Bannister played three to Jac Phillips in the match against Ingrid Makowski’s rink in a close game where the lead changed a number of times until Phillips scored 3 shots on the last end to win by 4 shots, 22-18. Cheryl Nielsenbeck was Glenorchy City’s winner by 2 shots over Robyn Leggett in a low scoring game where only 28 shots were scored over the 21 ends.  Leggett’s third, Chris Dowl, steadied the Sandy Bay rink, but Cheryl Nielsenbeck played an excellent skip’s game for Glenorchy City to win by 2 shots, 15-13.

At Rosny, the home side eased itself away from the relegation zone with a single rink victory against bottom-placed Orford winning by 4 shots, 56-52, courtesy of a 14 shot win by Marlene Wakefield, 26-12, against Elaine Taylor. Wakefield was supported by consistent bowls from her lead, Pat Blood, and an excellent effort from her third, Di Nieuwhof. Orford’s Jenny Martin, 23-17 against Ailsa Milburn, and Dinah Bennett’s 2 shot win against Gaylene Ridgeway, 17-13, did their best for their side but fell just short of securing a momentous victory for their club.

Claremont’s woes continued at Howrah where it could muster just one rink win through Joy Voss’ 3 victory against Charon Foster, 22-19. Howrah’s Denise Tanner was the standout with a superb 11 shot win against Maree Morgan, 26-15, and Rosie Geeves also enjoying a comfortable 6 shot victory over Claremont’s Meekie Salter, 20-14. With its 14 shot win, 65-51, Howrah moved to the top of the ladder on percentage ahead of Kingborough.

Buckingham returned to winning form with an all rinks, 49 shot win over the visiting side, Sorell, 81-32. Janet Cowen performed creditably for her side in restricting her loss to Buckingham’s Jeanette Lane to just 3 shots, 17-20, but a huge 29 shot margin in Lynette Hall’s victory against Sorell’s Patricia Taylor, 37-8, all but assured Buckingham of success on the day. Christine Thompson was Buckingham’s other winning skip, defeating Vicki Philp by 17 shots, 24-7.
