Kingborough consolidates top spot

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

12 January 2023 (Round 10)

In a much-anticipated encounter, top side Kingborough played second side Sandy Bay in the match of the round of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant in the Kingborough Indoor Bowls Centre on Thursday, with the competition leaders consolidating their position at the top of the ladder with an emphatic all-rinks, 45 shot and 12 point win, 85-40. Sue Clark and Leonie Price for Kingborough were relentless, each winning 15 of the ends played on their rinks. Sue Clark was the big winner of the day, defeating Robyn Leggett 31-7.  Before lunch, Kerrie Lane, joining team regulars Therese Direen and Liz Rickards, was instrumental in setting up the win.  After the break, all four members worked as a unit, restricting Leggett to only one shot after the 8th end.

Leonie Price played superb bowls to defeat Yvonne Buckley, 29-15.  Vicki Bannister joined the team as third, playing alongside regulars Pauline Connell and Colleen Dance.  With all team members combining to restrict Buckley to wins on six ends only, it was Colleen Dance who played very good and consistent bowls.

Playing her first game as a skip since joining Kingborough, Sonia Martyn, along with Sue Mann, Greta Murray and Nadine Seabourne, played a strategic game against Jac Phillips, a highlight of this match being the number of times the mat length was changed throughout the game. Despite winning 11 of the ends played, Jac Phillips could not overcome the multiples scored by the excellent team effort of Martyn’s rink, who won by 7 shots, 25-18.

In a great contest that went down to the last end, Glenorchy Rodman defeated Claremont on two rinks to win, 57-54. Peta Barnett got off to a flying start against Claremont’s Maree Morgan and led 12-2 after 10 ends. Morgan won the matt on the 11th and mounted a spirited comeback to lead 17-15 at the 20th end. With Claremont 1 up overall, Barnett’s rink rallied and picked up 4 shots to win the day for Glenorchy Rodman. After a close tussle early, Rodman’s Crystal Brooks, supported by some great conversion shots by her third Lyn Flack, proved too strong in the second half of her match against Joy Voss to win by 8 shots, 24-16. Meekie Salter, with her second Maree Careless in the zone all day, controlled her match against Rose McCann to claim an 8 shot rink win for Claremont, 21-13.

Sorell secured an all-rinks, 35 shot win at home against Rosny Park, 75-40. With all team members contributing, particularly Beth Connell at three, Janet Cowens had a 34 – 6 win over Rosny’s Dianne Nieuwhof. Kaye Upchurch, with her third Elaine Winthrop playing well against her old club, had a hard-fought 6 shot win against Ailsa Milburn, 25-19. Assisted by consistent play from her second Shirley Hay, Vicki Philp fell in by a shot on the last end in a low scoring game against Gaylene Ridgeway, 16-15.

Howrah moved to second on the ladder with an all-rinks win against their hosts, Orford, 71-54. Charon Foster defeated Elaine Taylor, 30-18, Denise Tanner finished 4 shots to the better of Dinah Bennett, 20-16, and in the closest match of the day, Rosie Geeves fell in by 1 shot over Jenny Martin, 21-20. At Glenorchy City Buckingham won on two rinks, Lyn Hall 22-17 against Leonie Hyland and Christine Thompson by 1 shot over Ingrid Makowski, but it was Cheryl Ann Nielsenbeck’s 17-shot win against Bucks’ Jeannette Lane, 33-16, that ensured the 11-shot win overall for the home side, 66-55.
