Defending Premiers remain undefeated

Premier Division report by Peter Kirby

17 December 2022 (Round 10)

As Bowls South’s Derwent Eye Specialists’ Premier Division takes its Christmas-New Year break the defending premiers, Sandy Bay, undefeated so far this season, and 2nd placed Kingborough are almost guaranteed to retain their positions on the ladder for the remainder of the season. 3rd placed Glenorchy Rodman, 24 points in arrears, is in a battle with New Norfolk and Cremorne for the remaining two top four spots.

In another replay of last season’s Premier Division Grand Final, Sandy Bay was too strong for Glenorchy Rodman and posted a 12-2, 17 shot victory, 85-68, to remain undefeated this season. After a slow start, Keghan Booth was able to wear down Cameron Tegg and post a 13 shot victory, 27-14, with Booth and his three, Ryan McCoull, dominating the second half of the game. Bryce Guy posted a 4 shot win over Jack Ellis, 22-18, with Bryce’s two, Oli Clark, being the difference. Andrew Norris overcame his hoodoo against Luke Turner with a solid 3 shot win, 20-17, in a hard fought game with Norris playing some great conversion shots to get his rink over the line. In the closest contest of the day, Tony Vince managed a 3 shot win over Justin Plummer, 19-16. With Danny Gahan leading well against a sharply dressed Stephen Graf, Vince shot out to a 9 shot lead in the middle stages of the game. Plummer rallied to take the game to 16 all going to the last end. Vince held on to score a 3 with his last bowl to secure 2 points for Rodman.

Brighton defeated Buckingham at home by 25 shots, 91-66, winning on three of the four rinks. Grant Wakefield led the way with a 21 shot win over Barry Nash. Wakefield’s team of Luke Ransley, Lyn Triffett and Riley Davie were all in great form. Ricky Limbrick and Andrew Chamberlain had a close contest all day with Nimbrick’s No. 2, Simon Hartgrove, the dominant player on the rink. In a tight encounter, Michael Daniels was successful on the last end to secure a 20 – 19 victory over Grant Chamberlain. Buckingham’s Craig Owen, assisted by some exceptional bowls his No. 3, Stuart Rees, had a close game all day against Matt Breward, with the scores level after 20 ends. On the last end, with the jack being moved several times, Owen prevailed by 4 shots, 20-16, securing 2 points for Buckingham.

At Beltana, the visitors, New Norfolk, were too good for Beltana, winning on 3 rinks by 13 shots, 85-72. New Norfolk’s Kerry Hill had a great start, taking the first 5 ends to lead Alex McCoull 14 nil, and going on to win 29 -19. Chris Chalker had a seven shot win over Beltana’s Shawn Leitch, 22-15, and Wayne Clark defeated Shane Young, 20-15. Gary Richardson salvaged 2 points for Beltana with a 23-14 shot win over Lauren Banks.

Kingborough, in the comfort of its indoor green, completed a split rink, 21 shot victory over Cremorne, 95-74. Kingborough’s rink wins came from Ryan Guy, 17 shots to the better of Peter Marshall, 31-14, and Brent Forsyth, 31-17 against Garry Banks.
