Rodman and Bucks advance up the ladder

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

8 December 2022 (Round 8)

Glenorchy Rodman and Buckingham were the big movers at the completion of Round 8 of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant, with Rodman up to 5th on the ladder, and Bucks into the top four. At Glenorchy Rodman, a determined all round effort resulted in the visitors, Sorell, being outplayed and for Rodman an all-rinks win, 79-41. Roseanne McCann had an 18 shot win against Vicki Philp, 29-11, Crystal Brooks also won by a wide margin against Patricia Taylor, 29-14, and Peta Barnett defeated Janet Cowen, 21-16.

A resurgent Buckingham defeated their hosts, Rosny Park, on 2 rinks by 5 shots, 56-61, and although consistent wind made conditions difficult, good bowling prevailed on all rinks. A convincing 15 shot win by Jeanette Lane, 32-17 against Gaylene Ridgeway, set up the victory for Bucks. A close game between Bucks’ Christine Thompson and Judith Sherrin resulted in a 2 shot win to Thompson, 15-13, and sealed the overall result for Buckingham. Set up for the day with a 6 on the first end, the ever reliable Ailsa Milburn, assisted by good bowls throughout the game from her three, Di Petrie, contributed 2 points to Rosny by defeating Lynette Hall, 26-14.

Howrah was too strong for Glenorchy City at the Howrah Indoor Centre, winning on all rinks, 80-41. A significant highlight of the match were the excellent bowls from Howrah’s three leads, Glenda Iriving, Anne Mullavey and Shirley who created good starts for their skips. Rosie Geeves defeated Cheryl Ann Nielsenbeck by 16 shots, 27-11. Charon Foster was another big winner for Howrah, winning by 15 shots against Leonie Hyland, 27-12. In the closest game of the day, Denise Tanner defeated Ingrid Makowski by 8 shots, 26-18.

Sandy Bay defeated Claremont 10-2 by 8 shots in fluctuating windy conditions at Sandy Bay.  Consistent scoring by the Peri Buckley rink early in the game forged a 9-point rink win, 22-13, spearheaded by Yvonne Buckley playing at three. A tight game between Robyn Leggett and Meekie Salter resulted in a close game.  A strong finish by Sandy Bay with a 4 on the last end resulted in a 1 shot win to Sandy Bay, 20-19. Claremont’s Maree Morgan rink defeated Jac Phillips by 2 shots, 21-19, after a very close game throughout, the result of which could have gone either way.

Kingborough welcomed Orford to their Indoor Centre and enjoyed a 63-44 win and with 10 points awarded. Leonie Price and her regular team of Nadine Seabourne, Colleen Dance and Pauline Connell had recovered well from a loss the previous week, and with all team members playing very good bowls, took the lead on the second end and were never under any pressure from Therese Gatenby’s team.  With the lunch break scores 19-3, Gatenby added a further 8 shots to her score but was unable to stay in touch with Price.  Final scores were 29-11. Vicki Bannister, along with Kerrie Lane, Greta Murray and Sue Mann also played well as a team against Dinah Bennett.  Bannister took the lead early but Bennett fought back to level the scores at lunch. However, Bannister again took control and finished the day 22-14. Sue Clark, Liz Rickards, Sally Bowes and Theresa Direen struggled all day against Jenny Martyn, and despite some good bowling at times from team members, lost 12-19, for Martyn to collect 2 points for the visitors.
