Giantkiller Buckingham claims another Indoor Centre victim

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

1 December 2022 (Round 7)

The grass green at Buckingham has proved once again to be the nemesis of indoor centre-based sides with the Bucks ladies dominant against Howrah in their Round 7 clash in Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant, winning on 2 rinks, 60-44, in a repeat of their solid home win in Round 5 against the other indoor centre-based side, Kingborough. Buck’s successful day was set up by Lynette Hall’s rink 18 shot margin over Howrah’s Denise Tanner, 28-10. The other two matches were closer affairs with Buck’s other points coming from Christine Thompson’s 1 shot win against Rosie Geeves, 18-17, and Howrah’s 2 points coming from Charon Foster’s 17-14 win against Jeanette Lane.

Sandy Bay defeated ladder leaders Rosny Park by 8 shots, 53-45, winning on 2 rinks and losing the third rink by 1 shot in a closely fought contest on Thursday. Peri Buckley held off destructive bowls from Gaylene Ridgeway to win by 5 shots.  27 shots only were scored over the 21 ends in a tight game where no multiples were scored. Robyn Leggett won by 4 shots with Chris Dowl again playing consistent winning bowls.  Scores were level on the 15th end and a 3 to Sandy Bay on the 17th set up the Sandy Bay win. Rosny Park’s Ailsa Milburn defeated Jac Phillips by 1 shot.  Rosny led 15-6 at the 11th end but the Bay girls rose to the occasion to lead 20-19 with one end to play.  During the final end the lead changed several times, with a Rosny’s Ailsa Milburn playing her last bowl moved the jack to win the end by 2 shots, and the game by 1 shot, gaining 2 points for Rosny in a very tough battle, 21-20.

Despite closely fought games on all rinks Kingborough gained 10 points at Sorell with the final score 50-48 not decided until the final bowl of the final rink was played. Janet Cowens secured 2 points for Sorell with great lead bowls from Gwen Scott. Kingborough’s Sue Clark was the biggest winner of the day, with a 4 shot win against Vicki Philp. Clark and her team of Liz Rickards, Sally Bowes and Theresa Direen settled in the second half of the game with all members contributing to the head.  With Bowes and Rickards bowling well, the team took the lead on the 11th end.  Clark was able to make good conversions when necessary and finished the day 16-12.

Vicki Bannister, along with Kerrie Lane, Greta Murray and Sue Mann maintained a steady lead all day against Trish Taylor.  Although all team members played well, Kerrie Lane had a brilliant day in the third position, supported by Bannister’s classic conversions when called for. Leonie Price, Nadine Seabourne, Colleen Dance and Pauline Connell struggled at times with the difficult green and gusty wind.  Although down 4-15 at the lunch break, Price’s team dominated the second half of the game against Janet Cowen.  Price played some very nice conversions and confidently played two beautiful draw shots to add to the score on the final end.  Final score was 16-21.

The trip to Orford claimed another victim when Claremont ventured to the coast, with the home side winning on 2 rinks for an 11 shot victory, 68-57. Orford’s points came from Elaine Taylor, 28-15 against Jan McPherson, and in the closest game of the day, Janet Martin’s 1 shot win, 23-23, against Claremont’s Maree Morgan. Claremont’s 2 points were achieved by Meekie Salter’s 3 shot win against Therese Gatenby, 20-17.

At Glenorchy City, in Berriedale, the visitors, Glenorchy Rodman suffered a 13 shot, 2 rink loss to their hosts, 59-46. Glenorchy City’s winning skips were Ingrid Makowski, 20-12 against Peta Barnett, and Cheryl Anne Nielsenbeck, 21-14 against Rodman’s Crystal Brooks.  Roseanne McCann’s 2 shot win against City’s Leonie Hyland, 20-18, gained the 2 points for Rodman.
