Premier Division report by Peter Kirby

26 November 2022 (Round 7)

In Round 7 of Bowls South’s Derwent Eye Specialists Premier Division, Brighton came close to upsetting Sandy Bay on Saturday, going down to the reigning premiers by 4 shots, 78-84. Bryce Guy saved the day for the Bay easily defeating Tony Bartninkaitis by 24 shots, 34-10. Guy and his third David Morris were outstanding, continually changing the head to the Bay’s advantage. Andrew Norris got off to a great start against Ricky Limbrick, leading by 10 shots early in the game. Limbrick fought back to go down 15-22 and give Brighton a chance of victory. Brighton won comfortably on the other 2 rinks. Grant Wakefield’s team all played well with Riley Davie at three outstanding, defeating Keghan Booth 24-11. Matt Breward defeated Justin Plummer 29-15 to collect 2 valuable points for Brighton. Breward’s team of John Nichols, Col Felmingham and Mick Daniels combined well to outclass their opponents.

Claremont, with two of their regular players out, held on to win by one shot over a gallant Beltana, in a split rink result, 78-77, to end a 4 match losing streak. In a close game, Claremont’s Paul Hart, with second, John McDonald dominating, defeated Shawn Leitch by one shot, 20-19. In the match that determined the outcome, and with Adam Taylor leading well, it was Michael Taylor who earned the win for Claremont defeating Alex McCoull by 7 shots, 22-15. Beltana’s 4 points came from wins by Shane Young, held to a single shot advantage by Paul Grover, 21-20, and Gary Richardson, with his third Keith Miller playing great conversion shots, came agonisingly close to winning the match for Beltana, 6 shots to the better of Shane Peck, 22-16.

With 3 players withdrawing before the game due to illness, Cremorne recorded a meritorious 55 shot victory, 113-53, on its home green against Buckingham. Replacement Paul Karpiniec was instrumental in helping stand-in skip Pat Hoffman achieve a big 34-9 win against Rob Stringer. Peter Marshall had a 16 shot winning margin over Grant Chamberlain and Leigh Munnings was too strong for Craig Owen, winning by 14 shots, 31-17. Munnings and his rink of Brendan Dance, Geoff Doyle and David Langmaid scored a rare maximum 8 shots on the second end. Recording his 3rd draw in 4 weeks, Brad Knight had a tough tussle all day against Andrew Chamberlain to end the match 18 shots all.

At New Norfolk, the visiting side, Dover, remained winless for the season, losing on 3 rinks by a margin of 40 shots, 67-107. Wayne Clark’s rink was the big winner for New Norfolk, defeating Dover’s Josh Mazur by 26 shots, 35-9. Kerry Hill defeated Chris Norris by 12 shots, 28-16, and New Norfolk’s Lauren Banks recorded the 3rd rink win by defeating Cameron Norris, 25-18. Ricky Ormerod collected 2 points for Dover in his 5 shot victory against Chris Chalker.

In the Kingborough Indoor Bowls Centre, the home side enjoyed a comfortable 19 shot victory against Glenorchy Rodman, 87-68, and 11 points from wins on 2 rinks, a draw the 3rd, and losing on the 4th rink. Kingborough’s win was set up by Nic Courto’s rink with an 18 shot advantage over Glenorchy Rodman’s Grant Alford, 25-7. Ryan Guy achieved a hard fought victory over Rodman’s Tony Vince, 25-22. Kingborough’s Jason Fowler established an early lead over Cam Tegg, but when Tegg won the mat he called for short ends, much to the advantage of his team, with this match ending in a 20-all draw. Kingborough’s part-time skip, Brent Forsyth, put in a strong effort against Luke Turner, losing the match by 2 shots, 17-19.
