Form reversals the norm for Round 6

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

24 November 2022 (Round 6)

In Round 6 of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant four of the five matches were won by sides rebounding from losses the previous week. At Glenorchy Rodman, with one end to play in their match against Buckingham, the hosts were 1 shot in arrears overall when Peta Barnett, enjoying a fine season as skip, picked up six shots to defeat Buckingham’s Jeanette Lane by 7 shots, 26-19, and help her side to a 5 shot win and 10 points, 65-60.

Crystal Brooks, with junior Miley Sutton playing well in second spot, was Rodman’s other winning skip, fighting back from 16-20 after the 18th end against Lynette Hall, to win by the barest of margins, 22-21,  after gaining 6 shots over the final 3 ends. Buckingham’s 2 points were gained through Christine Thompson who had a great tussle with Rose McCann, winning 20-17.

Another side returning to winning form, Claremont, took full advantage of playing on their home green to defeat Sorell on all rinks to collect the maximum 12 points, 75-39. Skipping for the first time this season and well supported by her team, Jan McPherson led all day against Sorell’s Faye Gardner, winning 25-24. Claremont’s other rinks wins came from Maree Morgan, 22-13 against Janet Cowen, and Trudy Davis defeating Patricia Taylor, 28-12.

Also enjoying a change of fortunes, Howrah made good use of their indoor green to defeat Rosny Park, winning on 2 rinks and drawing the other, 61-51, and 11 points. With a drawn game likely with one bowl to play in her match, and down 4 shots at the head, Howrah’s Denise Tanner played a superb shot to drop just 2 shots and complete a 17-15 win against Gaylene Ridgeway. Rosie Geeves defeated Rosny’s Ailsa, 24-16 for Howrah’s other rink win. Charon Foster salvaged a draw, 20-20 against Judy Sherrin who gained Rosny’s single point.

In a match that was in doubt until the final few ends, home side Kingborough was relieved to win against a tenacious Glenorchy City side, 56-51. Kingborough’s 10 points came from wins to Leonie Price, 24-12 against Ingrid Makowski, and Vicki Bannister, 22-15 against Leonie Hyland. Cheryl Ann Nielsenbeck, with consistent support from her third, Tayla Munro, kept Glenorchy City in the match by defeating Sue Clark, 24-10, and 2 points for her side.

Sandy Bay made the long trip to Orford where they were too strong for their hosts, winning on 2 rinks by 23 shots, 68-45. Robyn Leggett defeated Orford’s Jenny Martin, 24-14, and Peri Buckley won by a similar margin, 25-11, against Elaine Taylor. Orford’s 2 points came from Dinah Barnett’s 24-19 victory over Jac Phillips, after a very close battle in the middle stages of the match, with both sides on level terms after the 9th, 14th and 17th ends.
