The match of Round 5 of Bowls South’s Women’s Thursday Pennant was the much-anticipated Grand Final rematch played at Sandy Bay on Thursday where a resurgent Sandy Bay scored an emphatic 2-rink win over reigning premiers, Howrah, 57-50. Inconsistent bowls from the visitors and a rampant Peri Buckley, supported by steady bowls from her lead, Adrienne Calnan, set up the win for the hosts, defeating her opponent, Charon Foster by 17 shots, 27-10.

Robyn Leggett’s rink provided the second rink win for Sandy Bay by 5 shots against Rosie Geeves, 21-16, after withstanding a late surge from Geeves. Howrah’s Denise Tanner salvaged 2 points for Howrah, defeating Jackie Phillips by 15 shots, 24-9.

On a heavy, slow grass green at Buckingham, the hosts put an end to Kingborough’s unbeaten run with a 2-rink, 8 shot win, 55-47. Although maintaining a small lead for most of her match with Bucks’ Jeanette Lane, Leonie Price could not overcome dropping 5 shots on the 18th end, losing the match by 5 shots, 17-22. The Kingborough rink of Sue Clark, despite consistent bowls from lead Liz Richards, lost to Bucks’ Lynnette Hall, 12-18. Two points were picked up for Kingborough by Vicki Bannister who defeated Christine Thompson, 18-15.

At Sorell, the home side enjoyed a comfortable all-rinks, 14 shot win against Orford, 68-54. Trish Taylor, with lead Karen Scott bowling well, had the biggest win for Sorell, 26-19 against Orford’s Therese Gatenby. Vicki Philp defeated Elaine Taylor, 24-20, and in the closest match of the day, Sorell’s Janet Cowen triumphed over Jenny Martin, 18-15.

The visitors, Glenorchy Rodman, in very windy conditions, provided stiff opposition for their hosts, Rosny Park, with two of the three contests being very close affairs. Although dropping 5 shots on the first end of the day, Rosny’s Ailsa Milburn overcame the deficit and the difficult conditions to defeat Rodman’s Crystal Brook, 21-19. Judith Sherrin played a great skip’s game, and producing excellent conversion shots when her team was in trouble, conquered the conditions and her Rodmans opponent, Roseanne McCann, to be Rosny’s other rink winner, 23-14. Level at the lunch break, Rodman’s Peta Barnett secured 2 points for her side, defeating Gaylene Ridgeway, 19-15.

On their home green, Glenorchy City was too strong for Claremont, completing a comprehensive 2-rink win, 76-43. A magnificent team effort by Ingrid Makowski’s rink resulted in a big win over Di Peck’s rink, 38-10, and Glenorchy City’s other rink win came from Cheryl Anne Nielsenbeck against Joy Voss, 21-13. Maree Morgan was Claremont’s sole rink winner, 20-17 against Leonie Hyland.
