A Bowls Report for The Mercury

by Peter Kirby

Bowls Premier League (BPL)

At the conclusion of Bowls Australia’s Bowls Premier League Series 16 at Club Pine Rivers last Friday star Tasmania Trident and recently retired Jackaroo, Rebecca van Asch, was named best female bowler of the tournament, an honour she has achieved in the past two series. Rebecca was rewarded the further honour of being named a member of the coveted all-stars team alongside Gary Kelly, from the Melbourne Pulse, and Tweed Heads player, Corey Wedlock.

The Tasmania Tridents finished in a creditable eighth position, just one win away from a top five position in the competition. After a poor start on day 1 the Tridents finished on a high, defeating two of the top three teams on the last day of the preliminary rounds of the tournament, and having beaten all five of the top teams, except for the eventual winners, Melbourne Pulse.

The Quarter Final round was played in very unpleasant, wet conditions in the afternoon with some matches conceded before the completion of games due to consistent rain. The Bowls Tasmania South B Grade Men’s Fours were played played at Beltana on Sunday, also, but with fewer teams entered only one round in the morning was necessary to qualify for the Semi Final round. Advancing are the four of Shane Winter, who defeated Allen Sculthorpe’s four, 20-15, and Tony Verrier’s rink, narrowly over Todd Clark, 11-9.

The two Open Men’s Semi Finals matches on Sunday morning are the teams of Josh Lording (Dover) v. Cam Tegg (Glenorchy Rodman/Dover composite team), and Darren Monks (Rosny Park) v. Luke Turner (Glenorchy Rodman). The two B Grade Men’s Semi Finals will be played between the teams of Wolf von Gehr (Buckingham) v.
