Dominant Sandy Bay Remain Undefeated

Premier Division report by Peter Kirby

12 November 2022 (Round 5)

In the Kingborough Indoor Bowls Centre on Saturday the current Derwent Eye Specialists Premier Division premiers, Sandy Bay, continued their recent dominance of their hosts at the venue with an emphatic 11 shot victory, 80 – 65, and 10 points to be 8 points clear at the top of the table.

Down 0-10 after five ends, Kingborough’s Ryan Guy was never able to reduce the deficit to Ryan McCoull and conceded the match, 12-24. Sandy Bay’s other rink win came from Bryce Guy, with his third, Oli Clark, playing some huge conversion shots early, over Kingborough’s Nic Courto, 25-15. Kingborough’s 4 points came via wins to Jason Fowler, 23-16, against Alby Norris, 23-16, and Brent Forsyth defeating Keghan Booth, 19-15.

At Cremorne, the home side’s all rinks, 30 shot win against Beltana was set up by Peter Marshall’s rink, 23 shots to the good of Shane Young, 38-15. Finishing strongly, Pat Hoffman, skipping in the absence of Leigh Munnings, had a 5 shot victory over Gary Richardson, 27-22. Cremorne’s other two rinks each won by 1 shot, Brad Knight 22-21 against Shawn Leitch, and Ralph Tieman 20-19 over Alex McCoull.

Although Claremont won on two rinks and drew on another against their visitors, Brighton, they still succumbed by 4 shots, 78-82. Brighton’s Grant Wakefield, ably assisted by his third, Michael Daniels, had a huge win against Michael Taylor, 29-8, and sufficient shots up to offset losses by John North, 21-18 to Shane Peck, and Tony Bartninkaitis, 12-22 to Paul Glover. Matthew Breward salvaged a draw against Claremont’s Paul Hart, 20-20.

Despite leading on all rinks early, the trip up the valley to New Norfolk was not a productive one for Buckingham, losing to their hosts on three rinks, 69-84. New Norfolk’s rink wins came from Lauren Banks, 23-17 against Roger Stringer, Kerry Hill, 25-17 over Andrew Chamberlain, and Chris Stalker defeating Barry Nash, 21-17. Grant Chamberlain, with consistent bowls from lead, Mike Casey, gained 2 points for Buckingham with an 18-15 win against Wayne Clark.

Not deterred by the long trip to Dover, Glenorchy Rodman won on three rinks for a 41 shot margin, 100-59. Rodman’s Tony Vince outclassed his opponent, Tony Norris, 41-8, and Jack Ellis had a 7 shot win over Dover’s Chris Norris, 24-17. The other two rinks were very close contests with Cam Tegg edging out Ricky Ormerod by two shots for Rodman’s third rink win, 18-16, and Josh Mazur picking up 2 points for Dover with a one shot win, 18-17, against Luke Turner.
