Resurgent Rosny Takes the Points

Ladies Division 1 report by Peter Kirby

3 November 2022 (Round 3)

Round 3 of Women’s Thursday Pennant bowls, played in cold and windy conditions, was not a good day for host clubs with four of the five matches being won by the visitors. The lone home side to be victorious on the day was Rosny Park, winning on two rinks against Claremont by 6 shots, for a 10 points to 2 result.

Claremont took the lead early and went to the lunch break with a 4 shot lead with Joy Voss’s rink leading the way. Voss’s rink picked up a six and looked set for a comfortable win, but with Judith Sherrin’s rink winning 5 ends in a row to for a memorable 20 -18 win for Rosny Park. With Rosny Park’s Ailsa Milburn playing some great conversion shots, Claremont’s first-time skip Trudy Davis battled bravely to concede to Milburn 20 – 13. Di Peck was Claremont’s only winner, claiming her match against Rosny’s Gaylene Ridgeway 17 – 14 after being 10 all at the completion of the 13th end.

Kingborough travelled to Howrah’s Indoor Centre, winning by six shots with the final score 58-52 and earning 10 points. Leonie Price, with Kerrie Lane bowling consistently to the jack, defeated Howrah’s Denise Tanner, 30 to 19. Between the 14th and 18th ends Tanner picked up 11 shots before Price’s team settled, winning the final three ends.

Vicki Bannister, playing her classic draw bowls to save a number of ends, also led Howrah’s Rosie Geeves for the entire game, winning by five shots 15-10.  Howrah’s only winning skip was Charon Foster who defeated Sue Clark 23 to 13. Foster had amassed a 10-3 lead, and although Clark fought back to take the lead after 12 ends, Foster countered with a six on the 16th to take the ascendency to win 23 to 13.

At Sandy Bay, the Glenorchy Rodman defeated their hosts 69 shots to 46, for a 10 points to 2 result. Sandy Bay’s lone winning rink of Jacqui Phillips, Gail Price, Pam Thomson and Jann Baxter were ahead for the entire game combining well.  Ends 11 to 14 ends, in particular, contributed 14 points to set up a solid win.

Glenorchy Rodman was too strong on the other two rinks. Crystal Brooks won 16 of the 21 ends played in defeating Peri Buckley’s rink, and Peta Bassett defeated Robyn Leggett by 9 shots.

Sorell claimed an all-rinks win and all 12 points against Glenorchy City, 67 shots to 57. The rink of Vicki Philp won by 6 shots. Lesley Cornish bowled well at lead all day, with Fay Gardner at 3 also playing good bowls.

Trish Taylor, back from injury, won a tough contest by 3 shots, 22 – 19, with Trish, showing that she hasn’t lost her touch. Kaye Upchurch at 2 and newcomer Elaine Winthrop played well in support. Janet Cowens won by one shot, 18 – 17, thanks to an amazing final bowl on the last end of the match. An excellent game by both teams with Beth Connell at 3 showing great composure all day.

The final match of the round was played at Buckingham with Orford showing that they can travel well by winning two of the three rinks by two shots, 59 shots to 57. Orford’s winning skips were Elaine Taylor, defeating Buckingham’s Jeanette Lane 20 – 19, and Jenny Martin having a nine shot win over Christine Thompson. Buckingham’s winning skip was Lynette Hall, who defeated Therese Gatenby 20 – 12.
