Howrah end premiership dynasty

Ladies Division 1 report by Connor Munnings

7 April 2022 (Grand Final Report)

Howrah have ended Sandy Bay’s dynasty in the Thursday Women’s Division 1 Pennant in an exciting grand final.

After winning 10 of the last 11 southern pennants, Sandy Bay’s winning streak came to an end with Howrah defeating the powerhouse on all rinks by nine shots and claiming the premiership. Charon Foster proved to be the major difference for Howrah with a 24-18 win over the in form Robyn Leggett, who had only lost two matches for the season prior to the grand final. With great leading by Anne Mullavey, Foster played some great bowls to change the heads that were well set up by third Denise Tanner and second Dianne Walch. Sandra Hawksley, with support from Sally Ridgeway, Janet Rutherford and Shirley Calvert, had a tight battle with Jacqueline Phillips to win by two shots. Not to be outdone, Rosie Geeves defeated Chris Dowl by one shot in a game that produced a high standard of bowls from both teams. However, it was Geeves’ rink of Lyn Page, Gaele Mizzen and Glenda Irvine that stood up and secured the win, and ultimately, the premiership for Howrah.

Sandy Bay redeemed itself in Division 2 with a 10-2 win over Glenorchy City by 22 shots. Sally Knott was superb in her defeat of Ingrid Makowski by 19 shots, while Gill Pratt beat Cheryl Ann Nielsenbeck 22-16. Cheryl Holland was Glenorchy City’s only winner over Patricia Balcombe by three shots.

In Division 3, Cremorne coughed up a significant lead at the halfway mark against Brighton to lose by three shots. The premiership push by Brighton was led Sue Wilton who beat Ellena Swain by five shots, while Elisabeth Hoare defeated Teresa Newman 22-19. For Cremorne, Kaye Wood beat Sue Grant 24-19.

Claremont defeated Kingborough 10-2 by five shots to claim the Division 4 premiership. Both Claremont’s Diana Sweeney and Yvonne Keane won by three shots over Maureen Sculthorpe and Jean Hemmings respectively, while Kingborough’s Elaine Cockshutt defeated Brenda Pinnington by one shot.
