Fierce Sandy Bay fire in finals

Ladies Division 1 report by Connor Munnings

17 March 2022 (Semi-Finals)

Sandy Bay demonstrated why they finished on top of the Thursday Women’s Division 1 Pennant, being ruthless in their crushing defeat of Kingborough in the second semi-final. Despite a COVID scare and an emergency bowler being brought into the team, consistent bowls from the Sandy Bay players saw them win 11-1 by 30 shots.

It was a dominant display from Chris Dowl’s rink, with emergency player Pamela Thomson providing great support in the three position.  Dowl was well set up by her front end in lead Gail Price and second Dianne Salt and was in control all game to win 29-11 over Kingborough’s Leonie Price.

Robyn Leggett’s rink of Yvonne Buckley, Jann Baxter and Jan Hobbs showed why they were the top ranked rink of the season with a comprehensive 12 shot win over Vicki Bannister. Sue Clark fought hard for Kingborough, but Sandy Bay’s Jacqueline Phillips kept scores close to play out an 18 all draw.

The win means Sandy Bay progresses straight through to the grand final while Kingborough get a second chance in the preliminary final.

Kingorough’s opponent will be Howrah who had a hard fought tussle against Claremont to win on all rinks by 12 shots.  Charon Foster, with great support from Denise Tanner, Dianne Walch and Anne Mullavey, was the pick of the rinks with a solid seven shot win over Jan McPherson.

Sandra Hawksley’s rink of Sally Ridgeway, Janet Rutherford and Shirley Calvert beat the in form Joy Voss 22-19, while Rosie Geeves had a tight battle against Maree Morgan to win by two shots.  Claremont are now eliminated from the competition, while Howrah will play Kingborough for a spot in the grand final.

In Division 2 Glenorchy City defeated Brighton in the 2nd Semi-final and will advance to the Grand Final.  Sandy Bay defeated Buckingham in the 1st Semi-final and will therefore play Brighton in the Preliminary Final next week.

In Division 3 Cremorne made it through to the grand final with a win over North Hobart, while Brighton defeated Beltana to book a spot in the preliminary final.

In Division 4 Kingborough broke their semi-final curse to beat Sorell and make it to the grand final. Sorell will now face Claremont who beat Glenorchy Rodman.
