Ladder finalised in windy conditions

Ladies Division 1 report by Connor Munnings

10 March 2022 (Round 18)

Players faced windy conditions in the final round robin game of the Thursday Women’s Division One Pennant as ladder positions were confirmed.

Sandy Bay secured top spot and a home semi-final with a comprehensive 12-0 win over Buckingham by 30 shots. Peri Buckley’s rink of Dianne Salt, Cynthia Shane and Gail Price will be firing heading into finals after defeating Jeanette Lane 26-9, while Jacqueline Phillips had a solid nine shot win over Christine Thompson. The game between Robyn Leggett and June Guy was the closest match of the day with Leggett getting over the line by four shots.

Kingborough will be the team to face Sandy Bay in the first semi-final for a spot in the grand final after defeating Orford on all rinks by 48 points and finishing second. Sue Clark, along with Laura Best, Kerrie Lane and Lee Shead were the big winners of the day with a 30-10 win over Jenny Martyn.  With all Kingborough bowlers playing consistent, Clark only allowed Martyn to win one end before the 15th end. Leonie Price led all day against Elaine Taylor to win by 16 shots, while Vicki Bannister had a tough battle against Carol Bannister before winning the final five ends to be victorious by 12 shots.

Howrah finished one point behind Kingborough in third spot with a close win against a determined Rosny Park at the Howrah Indoor Centre. For Howrah, Rosie Geeves, with great support from third Lyn Page, defeated Gaylene Ridgeway 22-15, while Charon Foster battled hard against Ailsa Milburn to win by 12 shots. Christine McGrath nearly gave Rosny the win by beating Sandra Hawksley 30-16, but Howrah eventually ended up getting the overall win by five shots.

Howrah will now play Claremont, who had 60 all draw with Glenorchy Rodman with points being split 7-5 in Rodman’s favour. Roseanne McCann’s rink of Pat McCann, Judith Latham and Carlene Guy ended their season on a high with a 10 shot win over Claremont’s Jan McPherson. Rodman’s Crystal Brooks defeated Maree Morgan by three shots.  Claremont’s Joy Voss had the biggest margin over Debbie Stearnes, winning 25-12.

The winner of Howrah and Claremont will play the loser of Sandy Bay and Kingborough, while the loser will be eliminated from the competition.

Sorell confirmed Dover’s fate at the bottom of the ladder with an all rinks win by 19 shots. Faye Gardner, with great support from lead Gwen Scott, set up the game for Sorell with a comfortable 13 shot win over Kathleen Townsend. Vicki Philp had a tight tussle with Dover’s Sheryl Phillips, but with great bowls from lead Karen Scott and second Barbara Walker, Philp clinched the win by five shots. Sorell’s Patricia Taylor went into the last end of her game against Debbie O’Donnell three down on the scoreboard, but with lead Shirley Hay drawing two close and second Kaye Upchurch adding a third shot, Taylor was able to draw another shot with her last bowls to give the rink a one shot win.

Dover will be relegated to Division 2 for next pennant while Division 2 minor premiers Glenorchy City will be promoted to Division 1.
