Battle for a double chance heats up

Ladies Division 1 report by Connor Munnings

24 February 2022 (Round 16)

While the top four of the Thursday Women’s Division 1 Pennant have been confirmed with two rounds remaining, things have started to heat up in the battle for a double chance in the finals. Sandy Bay currently sit in second place on 133 points, but are only one point in front of Howrah and 13 points in front of Claremont. Meanwhile, Kingborough sit in first position on 141 points.

Sandy Bay were too strong for eight placed Sorell, winning 10-2 by 15 shots. The Sandy Bay rink of Chris Dowl, Peri Buckley, Dianne Salt and Gail Price conquered Sorell’s synthetic green to defeat Patricia Taylor by 18 shots. Robyn Leggett had a tight tussle against Sorell’s Vicki Philp, but was able to secure a 24-17 victory. Sorell gained two points with Faye Gardner beating Jacqueline Phillips by 10 shots.

Howrah finished strongly to defeat Buckingham 10-2 by 13 shots at Howrah. After trailing 0-11 against Christine Thompson, the Howrah rink of Charon Foster, Denise Tanner, Janet Rutherford and Anne Mullavey fought hard to comeback and win 19-17. Howrah’s Rosie Geeves comprehensively defeated Jeanette Lane by 16 shots, while June Guy was Buckingham’s only winner, defeating Sandra Hawksley 26-21.

Claremont also had a 10-2 win against Orford, eventually winning by 10 shots overall. Joy Voss and her rink of Dianne Peck, Trudy Davis and Julie White played great bowls all day to defeat Elaine Taylor 25-11.  The game between Claremont’s Maree Morgan and Orford’s Jenny Martyn went down to the wire, with Martyn holding two and needing three to draw the game.  However, Morgan managed to draw the shot and defeat Martyn by four shots.  Claremont’s Jan McPherson had an early lead over Carol Bannister, but Bannister played some big bowls to win the game 21-13 and secure Orford two points.

Kingborough earned 10 points against a valiant Rosny Park by 15 shots. Vicki Bannister’s rink of Sue Mann, Greta Murray and Pauline Connell led the way for Kingborough with a 15 shot win over Ailsa Milburn.  At one stage, Bannister held a 22-0 lead before Milburn scored on the ninth end. A seven on the 18th end helped Kingborough’s Leonie Price recover from a slow start to defeat Gaylene Ridgeway 23-17. Christine McGrath secured Rosny two points with a 21-15 win over Sue Clark.

Last placed Dover surprised Glenorchy Rodman, defeating them 10-2 by 14 shots.
