Beltana surprise premiership contenders

Derwent Eye Specialists Premier Division report by Connor Munnings

Beltana surprised Sandy Bay to keep off the bottom of the ladder in round six of the Derwent Eye Specialists Premier Division.  Playing on their home surface, Beltana were never troubled in their 12-2 22 shot victory over Sandy Bay, with all rinks playing superb bowls. Brendan Breen defeated Ryan McCoull 24-14, Shane Young beat Bryce Guy by 10 shots and Nick Courto was victorious over Keghan Booth 23-13. Darren Bettie was well supported by his rink of Philip Hobbs, Peri Buckley and Mike Glancy to beat Michael Coppleman 23-15 and secure two points for Sandy Bay.

Rosny Park travelled to Brighton to play on the synthetic surface and kept its top four chances alive with a comfortable 12-2 18 shot victory. Darren Monks and second John McKibben were in top form to defeat Matthew Breward 22-11. Dale Maundrill, with support from Morgan Williams, Neville Bryan and John Boatwright, had a tight tussle with Greg Fehlberg early in the match, but were able to get away and win by seven shots.  Peter Bannister, with second Grant McCormack bowling brilliantly, held off a late comeback by Brighton’s John North to record a two shot victory.  Brighton’s Grant Wakefield defeated Graham Rowbottom 20-18.

Glenorchy Rodman played at home against Cremorne in a competitive game before settling on a 12-2 win by 18 shots. Steve Clifford, with great support from his rink of Jack Ellis, Rod Turner and Crystal Brooks, was the big winner for the home side, defeating Brad Knight by 16 shots.  Mitch Long and Tony Vince helped Isaac Maughan to an eight shot win over Ralph Tieman, and Luke Turner returned to form to defeat Leigh Munnings 24-16.  The Cremorne rink of Peter Marshall, Garry Banks, Steve Lanning and Ian Webster bowled superbly to secure the visitors two points with a 14 shot win against Paul Cruise.

Buckingham claimed 12 points and jumped into the top four after defeating Dover by eight shots. Buckingham’s Andrew Chamberlain played some great bowls against Jacob Sherrin-Wall to win by six shots and Grant Chamberlain was too good for Roger Dale to win by three shots.  Alvin Cooke defeated Brad Carver 19-15, while Josh Lording helped Dover get two points with a four shot win over Todd Oakley.

Kingborough continued its undefeated run to the year with a convincing all rink 42 shot victory over Claremont.  Jarod Long defeated Michael Taylor 29-12, Will Coad beat Paul Hart by 12 shots, Jason Fowler won 22-15 against Adam Taylor, and Ryan Guy played out a six shot win over Shane Peck.
