Sandy Bay topples ladder leaders

Ladies Division 1 report by Connor Munnings

18 November 2021 (Round 5)

In a rain-washed round of the Thursday Women’s Division 1 Pennant, Sandy Bay were victorious over the ladder leaders in Howrah by 10 shots.  A five on the first end for the Sandy Bay rink of Chris Dowl, Cynthia Shave, Dianne Salt and Gail Price set up the rest of the match, with the rink coming away 25-17 winners over Sandra Hawksley.  Robyn Leggett had great support from Jac Phillis, Jann Baxter and Jan Hobbs to win over Howrah’s Charon Foster by five shots.  A slow start from Sandy Bay’s Anne Whenn saw Rosie Geeves win by three shots and secure two points for Howrah.

Kingborough travelled to Buckingham in a game where the lead changed several times.  Play was halted for 30 minutes due to rain after 41 ends, with Kingborough down 35-46. However, after play resumed, Kingborough played exceptional bowls to win 63-53 and get 11 points. Kingborough second Nadine Seabourne provided great support to Leonie Price to help her to a 21-14 comeback victory against Christine Thompson. Sue Clark started strongly, but Buckingham’s Jeanette Lane fought back to have the lead on the 19th end. Clark once again took the lead on the 20th end and held on to win by three shots. Kingorough’s Vicki Bannister and June Guy had a tight tussle to draw 17 all.

Claremont continued its early season form to comfortably defeat Rosny Park 10-2 by 16 shots. With Trudy Davis playing well in the second position, Joy Voss led the way for Claremont and was never troubled on her way to defeating Christine McGrath by 15 shots. Claremont’s Jan McPherson stormed home on the final four ends to defeat Gaylene Ridgeway 19-14. Rosny’s Ailsa Milburn had a close match with Maree Morgan to win by four shots.

The rain caused havoc in the final two matches of the round.

Dover hosted Orford and after the lunch break Dover held a comfortable lead. However, consistent rain meant the game had to be called off before enough ends were played to achieve a result and each side was awarded six points.

The game between Sorell and Glenorchy Rodman was also washed out, with both teams getting six points.
