Rosny thwart Sandy Bay and rain

Saturday Premier Division report by Connor Munnings

23 October 2021 (Round 2, 2021-22)

In wet conditions, Rosny Park caused the upset of the round in the Bowls Tasmania South 2021-22 Saturday Premier Division, defeating last year’s premiers in Sandy Bay 10-4 by three shots.

Missing Darren Monks, John Boatwright and Connor Munnings, Rosny was led by Peter Bannister’s rink of Grant McCormack, Daniel Elwell and Michael Rankin.  Bannister led all day against Darren Beattie, and a five on the penultimate end helped him to a comfortable 16 shot victory.  Dale Maundrill, with great support from second Neville Bryan, was able to overcome Ryan McCoull by three shots.  With Geoff Roberts coming in as a last minute replacement for John Boatwright, Jenny Suttie kept scores tight against Bryce Guy, but some great bowls by third Justin Plummer helped Guy secure a one shot win.  Keghan Booth kept Sandy Bay in the game with a 31-16 win over Graham Rowbottom.  Booth was set up well by his rink of Lucas Howell, Scott Booth and David Anderson, and at one stage was 19-0 up before Rowbottom hit the scoreboard and closed the gap.

Staying dry in the Kingborough Indoor Centre, Kingborough survived a scare from Buckingham to defeat them 10-4 by five shots.  Will Coad with his rink of Robert O’Neill, Shane Garth and Callum Dinning were the big victors for Kingborough, defeating Alvin Cooke by 20 shots.  Kingborough’s Jason Fowler and Buckingham’s Andrew Chamberlain had a close battle, with Fowler winning by one shot.  For Buckingham, Grant Chamberlain was able to beat Jarod Long 17-11 and Todd Oakley defeated Ryan Guy by 10 shots.

The other teams weren’t able to start their 2021-22 campaigns due to the inclement weather.  Claremont have returned to Premier Division and will be keen to show why they were the Division 1 premiers last season.  Glenorchy Rodman were the big players in the off-season, recruiting young guns Isaac and Jorja Maughan from Buckingham, as well as father-son duo Jack and Brett Ellis from Claremont.
