Breakthrough as Claremont claims powerful win

Ladies Division 1 report by Connor Munnings

28 October 2021 (Round 2, 2021-22)

CLAREMONT got its first win in the Thursday Women’s Division 1 Pennant, with an all rinks 38 shot win over Sorell at home. Jan Mcpherson’s rink of Rhonda Rider, Elizabeth Sweeney and Wendy Gray played great bowls all day to defeat Sorell’s Faye Gardner 28-11. With third Meekie Salter starring, Claremont’s Maree Morgan had a 13 shot win over Vicki Philp. Joy Voss had strong support from third Dianne Peck and Trudi Davis to defeat Trish Taylor 22-14.

Sandy Bay weren’t able to continue their winning form, and despite winning on two rinks, went down to Dover 8-4 by five shots. Playing on Dover’s synthetic surface, Sandy Bay’s Robyn Leggett led Dover 12-11 on the 13th end, but with great support from her rink of Margaret Tapp, Linda Fletcher and Jill Brown, Dover’s Kathleen Townsend was able to win the every end except one for the next eight ends to run out 16 shot winners. Wins for Sandy Bay on Anne Whenn and Chris Dowl’s rinks could not counter the loss by Leggett to Townsend. In a tight struggle, Dowl was able to defeat Dawn Garland 21-17 after scoring a four on the 18th end.  Whenn defeated Sheryl Phillips by seven shots.

Kingborough welcomed Glenorchy Rodman to its Indoor Centre and celebrated a 23 shot victory. With her rink of Sue Mann, Greta Murray and Pauline Connell providing consistent bowls all day, Kingborough’s Vicki Bannister was able to add to the score on numerous occasions and lead all day to defeat Debbie Stearnes 23-10.  Third Maddison Johnston played some big conversion shots for Kingborough’s Sue Clark to help her to a 12 shot win over Crystal Brooks.  Roseanne McCann had a tight two shot victory over Leonie Price to give Glenorchy Rodman two points.

Howrah had a hard fought 14 shot 10-2 win against Orford at Orford. Rosie Geeves led the way with her rink of Lyn Page, Gaele Mizzen and Shirley Calvert to defeat Jenny Martyn by 14 shots. Sandra Hawksley came from behind to defeat Dinah Bennett 19-15, with Hawksley playing some clutch bowls to secure the win. Carol Bannister got Orford two points with a four shot win over Charon Foster.

Buckingham defeated Rosny Park at Rosny 10-2 by 30 shots. Buckingham’s Christine Thompson defeated Gaylene Ridgeway by 18 shots and Jeanette Lane were 29-10 winners over Christine McGrath. Ailsa Milburn was Rosny’s only winner, defeating June Guy by seven shots.
