BTS Fours and Over 60s completed

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

Bowls South’s Women’s and Men’s Open and B Grade Triples Championship events, and its Women’s and Men’s Over 60’s Fours were completed recently. Claremont Bowls Club hosted the Women’s Triples, the Men’s Triples were played at Club Beltana, while the Women’s and Men’s Over 60’s were played on the synthetic at North Hobart Bowls Club.

A Glenorchy Rodman/Buckingham composite side of Peta Barnett, Crystal Brooks and Jeanette Lane (skip) won the Open Women’s Triples, defeating the Claremont combination of Clare Careless, Wendy Gray and Jan McPherson (skip), 23-16.

Lane’s team was very lucky to reach the Grand Final, winning their Semi Final against a Glenorchy Rodman/Claremont composite of Trudy Davis, Di Peck and Joy Voss by a shot, 21-20, while McPherson had an easier passage, winning by 9 shots over Sue Clarke (Dover), Yvonne Duffy and Colleen Dance (both Kingborough), 24-15.

The Women’s B Grade Triples Grand Final was contested by two teams from the Taroona Bowls Club, with Dianne Coleman, Tracey Cameron and Yvonne Bennett defeating their clubmates, Di Willett, Jenny Whitworth and Ros Bridge, 22-8.

Grand Finalists from Bowls South’s 2022-23 Open Men’s Triples decider met again in this year’s final, but with a different result. The Kingborough team of Jack Butler, Nathan Dinning and Ryna Guy-Rees avenged their loss to Brighton’s Matt Breward, Greg Fehlberg and Grant Wakefield the previous year, winning the title by 7 shots, 23-16.

Wakefield won his Semi Final match against the Brighton/Dover/Glenorchy Rodman composite of Riley Davie, Cam Norris and Cam Tegg, 20-16. Nic Courto (Kingborough), Gary Richardson and Ray Smith (Beltana) made Guy-Rees work a little harder to reach the decider, Guy-Rees getting there by 2 shots, 18-16.

Michael Behrend, Greg Jones and Michael Saunders, representing the Taroona Bowls Club, claimed the Men’s B Grade Triples title, defeating the Kingborough team of Robert McKenzie, Bruce Moran and Steve Sanders by 5 shots, 19-14.

Jeanette Lane (Buckingham) and her composite team of Cheryl Nielsenbeck (Glenorchy Rodman), Yvonne and Peri Buckley (both Sandy Bay) claimed the Women’s Over 60’s Fours title for 2023-24, winning by 9 shots, 22-13, against their Claremont opponents, Meekie Salter, Christine Andrews, Maree Morgan and Trudy Davis.

The Men’s Over 60’s Fours was won by the composite team of John Nichols (Brighton), Robert Lockley (Claremont), Wayne Cobbing (Beltana) and Shane Withers (Glenorchy Rodman) who won the barest of margins, 19-18, against a Kingborough/Royal Hobart composite team of Tony Verrier, Neville Riseley, Keith Hinkley and Gavin Cleary.
