Kingborough survives Rodman challenge

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

In the clash between first and second in Thursday’s round of Bowls South’s Women’s Division 1 Pennant, Kingborough hosted Glenorchy Rodman in their indoor centre, with the home side’s 2-rink, 21-shot victory, 69-48, consolidating their place at the top of the ladder, with Howrah the beneficiary, sliding into second, and relegating Rodman to third spot.

With a changed setup of Sue Mann Lead, Nadine Seabourne Second and Pauline Connell Third, Maddie Johnston’s rink was the big winner on the day.  They had an outstanding second half against Rodman’s Di Peck, winning by 21 shots, 31-10. Both Seabourne and Connell adapted very well to their new positions.

Also with an altered team, Kerrie Lane’s rink of Yvonne Duffy, Louise Wallace and Greta Murray, had a great start against Crystal Brooks’ Rodman team. Despite pressure from the opposition in the second half, Lane held on for a tight finish to won by 3 shots, 19-16.

Leonie Price’s rink started well and had a good lead for the first half, but then Glenorchy Rodman’s rink, skipped by Joy Voss, adapted to the conditions and overtook the Kingborough rink on the 18th end, finishing 3 shots up, 22-19, to claim a rink win for the visitors. Both skips showed great skill with brilliant bowls.

Showing skill and determination in an exciting showdown at Sorell, the home side emerged victorious to keep their hopes of survival in Division 1 alive with a 12-shot, 2-rink win, 60-48, over Claremont.

In an outstanding effort by Patricia Taylor’s rink, with all members contributing, Taylor defeated the Claremont rink of Maree Morgan by 19 shots, 28-9. Close heads by Taylor’s front end made the job easier for the skip, bringing up her first win for the year.

Cheryl Holland’s rink had a hard-fought, 7-shot win over Meekie Salter, 22-15, for Sorell’s second rink success.

The shot margins of Sorell’s winning skips were enough to carry Vicki Philp’s tough day against Jan McPherson who, with her teammates Gail Hay, Pam Ritchie, and Wendy Gray, secured 14-shot triumph over Philp, 24-10, for Claremont’s sole rink win.

Howrah’s all-rinks, 28-shot win, 70-48, at home to last-placed Rosny Park, moved the home side into second position on the ladder, 8 points clear of Glenorchy Rodman, while at the same time making Rosny’s chances of survival in Division 1 more difficult.

Denise Tanner’s 12-shot win over Gaylene Ridgeway, 25-13, backed up by Rosie Geeve’s 10-shot victory against Judith Sherrin, were the major contributors to Howrah’s success. Charon Foster was made to work a little harder for her more conservative 6-shot advantage, 23-17, against Rosny’s Carolyn Monks, to complete a very successful outing for the premiers.

Glenorchy City played steady bowls on their home green to defeat Sandy Bay on two rinks, by 20 shots overall, 63-43. Jac Phillips and Yvonne Buckley were no match for Ingrid Makowski and Marg Poulter in the windy conditions, with both City skips establishing early leads which they built on throughout their matches, Poulter defeating Buckley by 15 shots, 24-9, and Makowski bettering Phillips by 9 shots, 24-15.

Sandy Bay’s Peri Buckley started her match with a 5 on the first end against Leonie Hyland, a lead she maintained for the entire match to finish 4 shots in front, 19-15.

At Buckingham, Brighton returned to winning form with an emphatic 22-shot victory, 63-41, winning on 2 rinks and drawing the third, to reinvigorate their chase for a top four finish. Tayla Munro’s huge 19-shot win over Bucks’ Jeanette Lane, 29-10, was the inspiration for an almost perfect day for Brighton.

Lyn Triffitt hung on to win by 3 shots against Christine Thompson, 19-16, and Lynette Hall halted an all-rinks win for the visitors with her brave effort to draw her match with Noelene Fehlberg, 15-all.
