The Seagulls triumph over the Magpies

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

Another week of Bowls South’s Thursday Women’s Division 1 Pennant and yet another leader, this time Kingborough taking advantage of Glenorchy Rodman’s stumble at the hands of Sandy Bay to leapfrog into top spot.

Kingborough enjoyed their visit to Brighton. The sun was out and they won on 2 rinks, 62-43, resulting in them taking top place on the ladder with only 3 games left before finals.

Leonie Price’s rink was the big winner on the day for Kingborough, with Sally Bowes, Veronica Cleary, Vicki Bannister and Leonie Price all bowling well on a heavy green. They led well all day to finish with a 22-shot win over Noelene Fehlberg, 32-10.

Maddie Johnston’s rink of Sue Mann, Pauline Connell and Greta Murray were well matched with Lyn Triffitt’s team, but performed well to lead most of the game to hold on for a 5-shot win, 19-14.

Taylah Munro’s rink took an early lead against Kingborough’s Kerrie Lane who, with her team mates Yvonne Duffy, Louise Wallace and Nadine Seabourne, did well to contain Munro’s lead by consistently putting bowls in the head, eventually losing to Munro by 8 shots, 11-19.

Sandy Bay fought hard to defeat Glenorchy Rodman by 9 shots, 63-54, at Sandy Bay. Peri Buckley, Gail Price, Maxine Munro and Jann Baxter played controlled bowls to comfortably defeat Crystal Brooks by 14 shots, 28-14.

Jac Phillips and Joy Voss had a closer contest, playing shot for shot until Phillips pulled away, winning each of the last five ends to win by 3 shots, 22-19.

Rodman’s Peta Barnett had established a winning lead by the third end of play against Yvonne Buckley, from there she was never headed to secure a rink win for Rodman, 8 shots up on Buckley, 21-13.

At Glenorchy City, the hosts shared rink wins their opponents, Howrah, but conceded the overall win to the visiting side by 10 shots, 65-55, with Margaret Poulter’s match with Howrah’s Charon Foster ending in a 21-all stalemate.

Rosie Geeves had a solid 11-shot win against Leonie Hyland, 25-14, and Denise Tanner’s 1-shot loss to City’s Ingrid Makowski, 19-20, ensured a successful visit to the northern suburbs for Howrah.

In a thrilling lawn bowls match at Claremont, Buckingham emerged triumphant by the slimmest of margins, 62-61.

The standout performance of the day came from Claremont skip, Maree Morgan, leading her team of Maree Careless, Rhonda Rider, and Trudy Davis, to dominate the rink throughout the match, except for a brief setback on the 17th end when Bucks scored an impressive 7 shots. However, Morgan and her team showed great resilience and composure, ultimately securing a 3-shot victory over Lynette Lane’s team, 23-20.

On the other hand, Bucks’ skip, Christine Thompson, and her three, Pat Zapotocki, kept Meekie Salter’s team on their toes, managing to keep their opponents scoreless until the fifth end when Claremont finally opened their account, winning the end by 2 shots. Despite a valiant fightback from Meekie Salter’s team, they fell short by just 2 shots on the final end, 23-21.

A similar story unfolded in the match between Claremont’s Jane McPherson and Jeanette Lane. Although Lane initially dominated the scoreline, McPherson fought back to level the scores at 12 shots each after the 12th end. In a hard-fought duel, Lane emerged victorious over McPherson, clinching a 2-shot win, 19-17.

Perfect conditions on a fast grass green at Rosny, and with relegation on the line, Sorell and Rosny came to play. And play they did, close heads and great bowling saw the leads seesaw after the lunch break. The day was finally won for Sorell by Cheryl Holland’s rink. A great team effort yet again and great skip’s bowling by Holland saw her win convincingly by 11 shots over Judith Sherrin, 25-14, to counter Sorell’s losses on the other rinks.

While Rosny claimed the other two rinks, it was the efforts of Sorell’s losing skips, Trish Taylor and Vicki Philp, in minimising their losses to Rosny’s Gaylene Ridgeway (13-16) and Carolyn Monks (18-22) respectively, that enabled Sorell to win the battle to avoid relegation by 4 shots, 56-52.
