Top three consolidate their ladder positions

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

The three leading sides in Bowls South’s Thursday Pennant Division 1 had solid wins to consolidate their ladder positions, with the chasing pack all suffering setbacks. Second-placed Kingborough gained 2 points on leaders, Glenorchy Rodman, through its all-rinks win at home to Claremont, 79-61.

A good solid performance on Maddie Johnston’s rink of Sue Mann, Pauline Connell and Greta Murray, saw them lead from start to finish against Claremont’s Meekie Salter, winning by 7 shots, 28 to 21.

Leonie Price’s rink, Sally Bowes at lead, debutant Deb Smith at two bowling very well, and Vicki Bannister at three, led all day against Claremont’s Trudy Davis, finishing 3 shots up, 24-21. On several occasions Price drew shot with touchers to add to score or convert.

Kerrie Lane’s rink of Yvonne Duffy, Louise Wallace and Nadine Seabourne, took the lead early and worked well together to increase their lead against Jan McPherson’s rink. Louise Wallace had a great game, consistently putting bowls in the head. Lane won the match by 8 shots, 27-19, to round out Kingborough’s all-rinks win and consolidate second place on the ladder.

In tricky conditions at Glenorchy Rodman, the home side picked up 10 points against Brighton, winning by 19 shots, 70-51. Peta Barnett, with Jane Richardson leading well, was never headed at any time to run out a 13-shot winner over Noelene Fehlberg, 27-14.

Joy Voss didn’t have it all her own way against Brighton’s Lyn Triffitt, being 16-19 down after 15 ends, but rallied to win the last six ends, picking up 12 shots to run out winners by 9, 28-19.

Rodman’s Crystal Brooks led Tayla Munro 12-5 at lunch, and still 14-8 up after 14 ends, before Munro and her team played some great bowls in the conditions, to win 7 of the last 8 ends to finish 3 shots ahead, 18-15, picking up a valuable rink win for the visitors.

At Howrah, the home side won the battle between the third and fourth placed sides, defeating Sandy Bay on 2 rinks, 58-46. Denise Tanner was the big winner for Howrah, defeating Peri Buckley by 17 shots, 26-9.  Anne Mullavey, Shirley Calvert, Janet Rutherford and Denise Tanner took advantage over an unsettled Sandy Bay rink, who were unable to penetrate the strong attack.

Sandy Bay’s Yvonne Buckley played a tight match with Howrah’s Rosie Geeves, before Geeves pulled away to win by 5 shots, 20-15, and a second rink for the home side.

Sandy Bay’s Jac Phillips held a 12-0 lead before Charon Foster scored on the 9th end.  Solid bowls by Jac Phillips, Robyn Leggett, Jan Hobbs and Annie Wishink for the entire game ended in a convincing 10 shot win to the Bay, 22-12.

Buckingham had a crushing win at home over ninth placed Rosny Park, dominating on all rinks to finish 47 shots up, 94-47. Bucks’ three skips finished with double digit leads over their opponents, with none better than Lynette Hall’s 19 shot victory over Rosny’s Carolyn Monks, 33-14.

Jeanette Lane was not far behind with her 17-shot advantage over Rosny’s Judith Sherrin, 29-12, while Rosny’s Gaylene Ridgeway made Christine Thompson work a little harder for her 11 shot win, 32-21, to round out Buckingham’s perfect day.

Last-placed Sorell was hopeful of a points gain at home against Glenorchy City, and at lunch scores were close on all rinks. Good bowling was difficult in the blustery conditions that worsened during the day. The visitors secured a 2-rink win by 23 shots, 76-53, with the cellar dwellers hopeful of a better outcome in their Round 15 match at Rosny Park.

Vicki Philp’s rink had a great battle against Leonie Hyland, with all team members contributing for Sorell’s only rink win secured on the second last end, 21-18.

Ingrid Makowski was in top form against Cheryl Holland, finishing 18 shots up on the Sorell skip, 29-11, with Margaret Poulter chiming in with an 8 shot margin over Sorell’s Trish Taylor for City’s second rink win.
