Brighton keeps pressure on top four

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

Round 13 action in Bowls South’s Thursday Women’s Pennant Division 1 resulted in good wins to the top 3 sides, while Brighton kept up pressure on the top 4 with its win over Sandy Bay.

In a thrilling match between the two top sides at Claremont, on the home side put up a strong fight against Glenorchy Rodman, however, the latter’s skill and strategy proved too much to handle, Rodman emerging victorious over Claremont, 72-45.

The One shining moment for Claremont came from Jan McPherson’s rink, who showcased unwavering determination and skill against Peta Barnett’s rink. McPherson’s rink displayed composure and resilience, maintaining their lead from the 8th end until the end of the game.

Unfortunately, McPherson’s impressive 22-19 win was the solitary rink gain for Claremont, the other two matches falling to the visitors. Joy Voss was in dominating form against Meekie Salter, winning, 29-5, win over Claremont’s Meekie Salter, Crystal Brooks outplayed Trudy Davis, 24-18, for Rodman’s second rink win.

Kingborough travelled to Rosny Park on a sunny but often windy day. Winning on all rinks, Kingborough’s 28 shot victory, 73-45, moved it to second place outright.

In a neck and neck battle early between Rosny’s Judith Sherrin and Leonie Price, Price did well to grab a good lead after the lunch break. With steady bowling and some crucial conversions by skip Price, the visitors pulled away for a crucial win, 28-18.

Maddie Johnston’s rink bowled well in the sometimes-difficult conditions to have a handy lead all day against Rosny’s Sally Knott rink, with Johnston adding a second 10 shot win to Kingborough’s tally, 25-15.

Kerrie Lane and Rosny’s Gaylene Ridgeway had a close tussle all day, but Lane finished well with strong focus and a stand out end kill by Lane, completing the all-rinks win for Kingborough, 20-12.

Sorell suffered a huge all-rinks loss at the Howrah Indoor Bowls Centre, with the 71 shot, 93-22, win lifting Howrah to third position on the ladder. Fortunately, although losing badly at Howrah, last-placed Sorell did not lose ground to Rosny Park in the relegation battle, with Rosny also suffering an all-rinks loss.

Sally Ridgway had a commanding 34 shot victory over Trish Taylor, 39-5, with Charon Foster not far behind, defeating her Sorell opponent, Vicki Philp, by 21 shots, 31-10.

Denise Tanner rounded out the all-rinks win for the premiers, winning by 16 shots against Cheryl Holland, 23-7.

Brighton defeated Sandy Bay 7 shots, 63-56, at Sandy Bay. Lyn Triffitt was too strong for first-time skip, Sally Knott, winning by 16 shots, 31-15, for Brighton’s solitary rink win. Triffitt picked up two 6’s and a 5 on the way to her comprehensive victory.

Sandy Bay picked up the other two rinks. Jac Phillips lost the first end to Noelene Fehlberg but then went on to lead for the entire match, ending 6 shots up, 19-13,

Peri Buckley and Brighton’s Taylor Munro played a more even game, matching scores bowl for bowl until a 4 to Buckley on the 19th enabled her to draw away and win by 3 shots, 22-19.

Home side, Glenorchy City, scraped in for a lucky victory over Buckingham, 78-54, thanks to the magnificent efforts of Leonie Hyland and her team, who defeated Bucks’ Lynette Hall by a whopping 32 shots, 41-9, to establish the winning break for City.

Buckingham won on the other two rinks, Christine Thompson defeating Margaret Poulter by 5 shots, 21-16, and Jeanette Lane a 3 shot victor over Ingrid Makowski, 24-21, but far short of covering Hall’s loss to Hyland.
