Buckingham triumphs against ladder leaders

A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby

Bowls South’s Thursday Women’s Division 1 Pennant continues to throw up unexpected results. For the second successive season at Buckingham the home side has accounted for Howrah, this time on all rinks by 19 shots, 68-49, shunting the previous ladder leaders to fifth spot, 4 points adrift of Sandy Bay in fourth.

Bucks’ Jeanette Lane gave her side a great boost with her 10 shot defeat of Denise Tanner, 24-14, and Lynette Hall, not to be outdone, won by 8 shots over Howrah’s Sally Ridgeway. Christine Thompson was forced to fight hard by Charon Foster to close out the all-rinks win for the home side, scraping in by the very barest of margins against an unlucky Foster, 20-19.

Glenorchy Rodman got away to a flyer against the visitors Rosny, leading 35-5 overall after 18 ends before cruising to a comfortable 3-rink 39 shot win, 78-39. Crystal Brooks had great support from her rink, particularly Cheryl Nielsenbeck in the two spot, to run out winners by 18 shots, 27-9, against Judith Sherrin.

Peta Barnett’s rink also all played well, with Barb Biernacki outstanding, to defeat Gaylene Ridgeway by 15 shots, 31-16.

Joy Voss survived a scare from Rosny’s Carolyn Monks, who clawed back to be only 2 down after 15 ends. Voss steadied, winning 5 of the last 6 ends to win by 6 shots, 20-14.

With other Round 12 results going in its favour, Glenorchy Rodman jumped to the top of the ladder and will face a competitive Claremont at Claremont in the next game.

Kingborough were all-rinks victors at home in their Indoor Centre, defeating Glenorchy City by 26 shots, 70-44.

Kerrie Lane and her team of Nadine Seabourne, Louise Wallace and Yvonne Duffy combined well, with everyone contributing to a great team effort.  Down at the lunch break, the team fought back and only allowed Glenorchy City’s Leonie Hyland wins on three ends in the final twelve ends to win by 8 shots, 27-19.

Maddie Johnson, along with Greta Murray, Pauline Connell and Sue Mann played consistently all day against City’s Ingrid Makowski.  Mann and Connell bowled well to set up winning heads, with support from Murray and Johnston converting when necessary. In a little piece of brilliance midway through the match, a seemingly wayward shot from Johnston cannoned off a wide bowl to travel across the green, to pick up the jack cleanly, to claim the end for her team. Johnston went on to win the match by 14 shots, 25-11.

In difficult conditions at Sorell, Sandy Bay bounced back from the previous week’s disappointing result to claim a 2 rink win by 19 shots, 61-44. Heavy rain set in at the lunch break with Sorell well placed on 2 rinks, unfortunately they couldn’t quite contain the Bay.

Vicki Philp’s rink was always chasing in their game with Sandy Bay’s Yvonne Buckley, who was supported by great bowling from her three, Sally Knott. Buckley scored on 14 of the ends played to win by 19 shots, 29-10.

After starting convincingly, Peri Buckley’s rink went on to win just 8 of the ends played, losing 10 ends each by 1 shot, and finding it difficult to best a measured performance from Sorell’s Trish Taylor, who led by 3 shots with one end to play.  However, Buckley picked up a 4 on the final end to get home by a shot, 19-18.

In a great team effort, Cheryl Holland’s rink, Elaine Winthrop especially, won 12 of the ends played, building a good 9 shot lead by the 14th against Jac Phillips, who fought back over the concluding ends to reduce the deficit, with Holland hanging on to defeat Phillips by 3 shots, 16-13, to win a rink for Sorell.

What a shame the weather from earlier in the week failed to produce the same conditions at Brighton on Thursday.  With players scurrying for extra clothing to fend off the cool windy conditions, Claremont seemed hold the upper hand in dealing with the bleak day.

The standout performance of the day came from Claremont’s Meekie Salter who brilliantly held Noelene Fehlberg to winning just 7 ends for the day. With only 7 ends played leading into the lunch break, and trailing 7-10, meant a very long afternoon ahead for Fehlberg and her team. There was a glimmer of hope after lunch, with Fehlberg picking up a few shots, but Salter’s rink was too strong in all positions. A strong game from Salter’s lead, Judy Holloway, ensured that Salter was to maintain her dominance over Fehlberg to be a runaway victor by 13 shots, 26-13.

Brighton’s rink skipped by Lyn Triffitt was sluggish in their start to the game and trailed 8-12 at lunch.  Things picked up after lunch but under the capable leadership shown by Jan McPherson, who had a great skip’s game, Claremont outplayed Brighton 12-9 in the second half to win by 7 shots, 24-17.

Tayla Munro’s rink started in a positive mindset against Maree Morgan’s rink and this continued all day. Consistent play resulted in having good bowls in the head all day enabling Munro to remain ahead of her tenacious opponent, rewarding her a 7 shot victory, 23-16, for Brighton’s solitary rink win.
