Orford v Glenorchy City
Orford consolidated their position mid-table in Bowls South’s Thursday Pennant Division One, recording their first all-rinks win for the season against home side Glenorchy City, by twenty-two shots, 72-50. Orford’s Jill Morgan was in front all game defeating City’s Miriam Garrett comfortably by five shots, 20-15.
Carol Bannister played strongly all day, winning by twelve shots against City’s Leonie Hyland, 29-17, and Jenny Martyn defeated City’s Margaret Poulter by five shots, 23-18. All in all, a great result for Orford at the end of the first half of the roster season, but leaving City languishing at the bottom of the table and still without a win.
Howrah v Brighton
Howrah finished the run to Christmas very strongly with an all-rinks win, 80-49, against Brighton at Brighton. Howrah’s Rosie Geeves and Brighton’s Tayla Munro were level pegging for the first seven ends with Munro breaking the deadlock for a gain of five shots and a five-shot lead after ten ends. In a powerful second half, Geeves allowed Munro to win just two ends for a two-shot gain while adding nineteen shots to her own total to take the match by nine shots, 27-18.
The match between Howrah’s Denise Tanner and Brighton’s Michelle Moate was close for the first nine ends, a five to Tanner on the tenth end breaking the deadlock. The second half of the match was all Tanner who picked up fourteen shots to Moate’s six to win by eleven, 26-15.
The Division’s top-ranked skip, Howrah’s Charon Foster, was in dominant form against Brighton’s Judy Williams, leading from the outset to be as much as twenty-one shots clear of Williams by the fourteenth end. Williams added some respectability to her score, winning each of the ends from the fifteenth to eighteenth ends to get within twelve shots of Foster, who went on to win the match by eleven shots, 27-16.
Buckingham v Kingborough
At home to Buckingham and playing on their indoor green, Kingborough won on two and drew the third, winning by thirteen shots, 70-57, to maintain second place on the ladder.
In a game of two halves, Kingborough’s Maddie Johnston had a great start against Buckingham’s Lynette Hall to lead by twelve shots after eleven ends, the twelve shots gained in winning three ends from the ninth to the eleventh end the difference between the two skips. Hall had a powerful second half but could not quite match Johnston’s first half effort, Johnston winning by eight shots, 28-10.
Buck’s Christine Thompson commenced the better against Kingborough’s Crystal Brooks, to lead by three shots after six ends. Brooks then won seven of the next eight ends to lead by six shots after the fourteenth end. Thompson reduced the deficit over the next three ends to be two shots behind Brooks who then finished the stronger, gaining six shots to Thompson’s three to end five shots up, 20-15.
Kerrie Lane built a good lead over Buck’s Jeanette Lane, the nine shots gained by her in winning four ends between the fifteenth and eighteenth ends putting her in a commanding position, eleven shots ahead. Relaxing the pressure had a devastating effect for the Kingborough rink, Jeanette Lane able to claim each of the final three ends to gain an incredible eleven shots to draw level with Kerrie Lane for a most unlikely draw, 22-all.
Sandy Bay v Rosny Park
Sandy Bay overwhelmed their hosts, Rosny Park, victorious on all rinks by a massive seventy-one shots, 105-34, with Robyn Leggett contributing the most to her side’s success, defeating her Rosny opponent, Mimma D’Amico, by thirty shots, 38-8.
Sandy Bay’s Peri Buckley was also impressive, winning by a substantial twenty-four shots, 35-11, against Rosny’s Elizabeth deBurgh, 35-11. Sally Knott completed Sandy Bay’s all-rinks win, beating Rosny’s Gaylene Ridgeway by seventeen shots, 32-15.
Claremont v Glenorchy Rodman
For the third week in succession Claremont was involved in a very close finish on their home green against Glenorchy Rodman but, unfortunately, this time failing by a shot for overall success, the visitors taking two rinks and victory by one shot, 60-59.
Cheryl Nielsenbeck won comfortably by eleven shots against Claremont’s Trudy Davis, 23-12, and Joy Voss added Rodman’s second rink win, finishing one shot up on Claremont’s Jan McPherson, 21-20. Maree Morgan all but stole the win for her side, defeating Rodman’s Lynn Flack by thirteen shots, 27-16, falling just short of the shots necessary for victory for the home side.
