Monster all-rink wins the order of the day
A report for The Mercury by Peter Kirby
After a week’s break for the Royal Hobart Show Day holiday, action recommenced in Bowls South’s Thursday Women’s Pennant Division 1 on Thursday, with the victors in three of the matches recording big winning margins.
Orford was again outplayed, this time at Buckingham where the home side played consistent bowls all day, to win by 48 shots, 85-37, with Orford having to seriously reflect on their performance before playing Sandy Bay in the next round.
After significant rain overnight the skies cleared for the start of play, although at times some ends were very challenging due to blustery winds, with Orford’s players continually struggling with the conditions. However, after the lunch break, Orford performed quite well, winning the first few ends convincingly.
Buckingham’s Lynette Hall and her rink made a great start against Orford’s Jill Morgan, scoring on nine of the first ten ends, which set them up for a 32-9 win. Jeanette Lane’s rink had the closest game of the day against Orford’s rink skipped by Carol Bannister, with only three shots separating the teams on the eighteenth end. Nine shots in the next two ends gave Bucks a bit of a buffer nearing the end, getting them over the line by eleven shots, 27-16.
Chrissie Thompson’s rink was consistent throughout their match with Orford’s Jenny Martyn rink, winning thirteen of the twenty-one ends played. With some great conversion shots played, they went onto record a 26-12 win.
Glenorchy City’s woes continued at home to Glenorchy Rodman, the visitors winning on all rinks by forty shots, 70-30. Lyn Flack’s rink led the way for Rodman, defeating City’s Miriam Garrett by seventeen shots, 27-10.
Joy Voss was not far behind, getting up by fifteen shots against City’s Leonie Hyland, 22-7, and Cheryl Ann Nielsenbeck closed out the all-rinks win for Rodman, ahead by eight shots against Margaret Poulter, 21-13.
Playing for the first time on Claremont’s new synthetic green, a formidable Sandy Bay side surged to an all-rinks win against their hosts, thirty shots up, 72-42, despite the high hopes of the home side. Peri Buckley’s rink played an excellent team game, leading Claremont from the first bowl. Claremont’s Maree Morgan battled on against the relentless competitive spirit of Buckley, who had a decisive seventeen-shot win, 27-10.
Sandy Bay’s Jac Phillips, with all her teammates providing strong support, especially Annie Wishink who provided great starts in the lead position, showcased impressive skill against Claremont’s Trudy Davis to claim victory in their match by eleven shots, 24-13. Davis’s rink fought valiantly but the Phillips rink responded to every challenge to finish on top.
Although the scores may not reflect it, Claremont’s Division 1 side demonstrated resilience and determination against a well-prepared Sandy Bay squad. The Claremont side will undoubtedly build on this experience as they prepare for future challenges.
In the battle between last year’s Grand Finalists in the Kingborough indoor centre, last year’s premiers, Howrah, proved yet again, that a big win on one rink can prove successful, if the other rinks can contain their losses to just a few shots, the visitors claiming bragging rights, seven shots up overall, 60-53.
Howrah’s Denise Tanner and her teammates were in magnificent form against Sue Clark’s rink, winning fourteen of the twenty-one ends played, winnig by fourteen shots, 27-13. Tanner was never headed, and led by thirteen shots halfway through the match. A mini surge from Clark between the twelfth and fifteenth ends brought her rink to within eight shots of Tanner, but the Howrah rink responded, winning six of the ends remaining to set up a winning margin overall for the visitors.
Kingborough skip, Kerrie Lane, had good support from her team of Sue Mann, Greta Murray and Leonie Price, who all bowled consistently in a close contest against the Howrah rink skipped by Rosie Geeves. Geeves battled to a two-shot lead after the ninth end, but the eight shots gained by Lane in winning the next two ends put her six shots up, which Geeves and her teammates could not overcome, Lane winning by five shots, 21-16.
Crystal Brooks, in her first game for Kingborough, seemed to be in complete control of her match with Howrah’s Charon Foster, leading by eight shots after eleven ends. Foster responded magnificently to the challenge, and playing excellent skip’s bowls, won all but two of the remaining ends to concede to Brooks by two shots, 17-19.
At Brighton, the home side won on two rinks, by nineteen shots overall, 66-47, against Rosny Park. Brighton’s Tayla Munro had a convincing sixteen-shot win against Rosny’s Gaylene Ridgeway, and Michelle Moate was not far behind, winning by fifteen shots against Elizabeth Debough, 25-14, for Brighton’s second rink win.
Rosny’s Mimma D’Amico performed superbly for her side to claim the visitors’ only rink win, defeating Val Lukasek by eight shots, 22-14.
