Sandy Bay survive a fright at Cremorne
Premier Division report by Peter Kirby
28 January 2023 (Round 13)
Sandy Bay remain undefeated so far this season in Bowls South’s Derwent Eye Specialists Premier Division following a hard fought split rink 9 shot victory over Cremorne, 79-70. Sandy Bay’s win was set up by Bryce Guy and his team who were in control all day, recording a strong 13 shot victory over Leigh Munnings, 24-11. Keghan Booth had a tremendous high standard tussle with Pat Hoffman, winning 13 of the 21 ends played, but managing just a 3 shot victory, 19-16. A highlight for Cremorne was the debut of 11 year old Mitch Banks who led for Peter Marshall. Mitch played a great game and was instrumental in helping Marshall and his rink record a tight 2 shot victory over Justin Plummer, 22-20. Brad Knight and his team led for 20 of the 21 ends but had to dig deep towards the end of the game with Knight himself playing some important bowls late to ensure a 5 shot victory over Andrew Norris, 21-16.
At Buckingham, third placed Glenorchy Rodman had a convincing 3 rink, 42 shot victory, 105-63, against the home side. Luke Turner’s rink was outstanding for the visitors, winning by 25 shots, 34-9, against Grant Chamberlain. Rodman’s other winning skips were Jack Ellis, 24-12, against Barry Nash, and Cam Tegg, who won by 10 shots, 28-18, over Andrew Chamberlain. Craig Owen continued his strong run of results for Buckingham, again salvaging a rink win for his side, holding on for a 24-19 win over a fast-finishing Tony Vince.
Kingborough defeated Brighton by 5 shots in a split rinks decision, 83-78. Will Coad and his third, Brent Forsyth converted well all day, leading the way for the home side, winning by 13 shots against Matt Breward, 26-16, with Jason Fowler in support with his 8 shot victory over Mick Daniels, 24-16. Ricky Limbrick, with his lead Paul Roberts outstanding, did his best for his side with his 14 shot win over Kingborough’s Ryan Guy, 27-13, and Grant Wakefield the other winning skip for Brighton with his close 2 shot win over Nic Courto, 22-20.
On their home green, New Norfolk won a split rinks contest against Claremont by 12 shots, 82-70, largely due to Mitch Banks’ 19 shot win, 29-10, against Shane Peck, 22-15. Kerry Hill provided the other rink win for New Norfolk with a 7 shot win against Paul Hart, 22-15. Claremont’s rink wins came from Michael Taylor with his 10 shot victory over Barry Bone, 20-10, and Paul Grover with his close 4 shot defeat of Chris Chalker, 25-21.
Bottom side, Dover, made it 2 wins for the season in a 3 rink, 10 shot defeat of Beltana, 88-78, to add some spice to the closing rounds of the roster season. Josh Mazur was the standout for Dover in his 16 shot win over Shawn Leitch, 31-15. Dover’s other winning rinks were much closer affairs, each getting home by a slim 2 shot margin, with Ricky Ormerod defeating Shane Young, 21-19, and Chris Norris, 20-18, over Brendan Breen. Gary Richardson was the sole rink winner for Beltana, defeating Jarrah Allan comfortably by 10 shots, 26-16.
